How do you get yourself to listen to a long album with no lyrics, even though you know you'll like it, it's just damn long?

what does the fact that it has no lyrics have to do anything with length?

I couldn't give two shits about lyrics in music.

I mean, if it was hip-hop or something that was based around lyrics sure, but otherwise it's just another instrument.

what the lyrics are so vital in this though.

wait im confused. you seem to be insinuating that it is difficult to get into long albums with no lyrics, yet you are saying you know you'll like it?

if you know you'll like it that seems like motivation enough...

If Freedom and Annihilation were one and the same concept at a philosophical level, or were at the very least closely related, you could make a case for the album embodying and defining perfection of two concepts that are ultimately the same. But you acknowledge that you are not even sure what it symbolizes...or is it perfect because it depicts the Apocalypse better that anyone else...even when "the simple truth is that nobody really knows [what the Apocalypse will look like]"

Did the band explicity state this was about the Apocalypse or is it so obvious that everyone thinks the same? Because it never ocurred to me until I read it. Nice exercise in rhetoric, nonetheless.

He's insinuating that the album is too long to justify not having any lyrics.

The band makes it pretty clear throughout the album that it is about the apocalypse. They even throw in a clip of the band interviewing a man asking him if he thinks the end of the world is coming.

As far as freedom and annihilation go, I am not saying they are the same thing on a philosophical level, only that the album embodies both. Sure, the ideas can overlap (some people see death as liberating, others do not) but that doesn't mean that the two ideas are identical, or are even being expressed in the same manner.

I'm not sure if that really answers your question but I hope it helped?

I have listened to a bunch of individual songs from this band, but listening to an entire LP with no lyrics seems like a chore to me even when this band is decent...it's honestly just that I favour lyrics over none.

It's the same as a band like Ratatat or Holy Fuck, individual songs are tolerable but entire albums feel so overwhelming. What kind of mood do you need to be in to enjoy something like this, that's my only question, not why would you listen to something with no lyrics.

@pwalcher: I'm actually not a huge post-rock fan myself, it's just that certain albums really captured my interest. This is obviously one of them. The music alone creates an atmosphere that would only be tainted or boxed-in conceptually by lyrics. But to answer your question I could listen to this in any mood...what usually prompts me is either an extremely contemplative mood (where a lack of lyrics opens up my mind and allows the music to be whatever i want it to be) or a mood where i am just fed up with vocals because i feel like every singer says the same thing.

@zettel: what is your actual question then, if you even had one?

You don't need to be in any particular mood, this is the kind of album that sets the mood for you. But going for a walk is the best way to listen to post-rock imo because when your player is in your pocket and you're focusing on not only listening but walking then it's much less boring.

fuck never mind best way to listen to this is on public transit.
I was on a bus in one of the unholy suburbs of Toronto and it was just house after house and they were all the same and it was a solid half an hour of this utterly depressing suburban mediocrity and sameness. I started noticing patterns in how the developments mix up House Model A,B, and C with House colour A,B,C
