Doug, excellent review my friend. Really, really well written. Just started listening to this album, and I'm already bowled over by it. I could easily see this climbing to a 4.5 with a few more listens. What a great year for independent folk; The Dodos, Fleet Foxes, and now this. Cheers, pal.

You should check out Recordings of the Middle East pat, even though this is excellent, it blows this out of the water

Doug, no problem. HBFS, listening to Recordings as we speak. I fucking love that album. I got it last year, loved it for awhile, and forgot all about it! This new one is giving it a run for its money, though in a quite different way. The new one has a much more somber, grounded feeling to it, I think. Both amazing albums, for sure. "Deep Water" gave me chills, as did pretty much the first six tracks. I have a feeling this will end up on my most played albums of the year list.

This record is absolutely gorgeous. I've bumped it up to a 4.5 after five full listens, and could essily see it reaching a 5 with sufficient growing time. Also, does anyone else, at all, believe that "Ninth Avenue Reverie" could be the track of the year? It sounds like a lost, early-Dylan track sung by a less cartoonish Jim James. It is, hands down, one of the most heartbreaking songs I have ever heard in my entire life. I'd like to hear from those who gave this album a 2 or 2.5. What are your primary issues with this record? Why do you feel it is average or poor? Is it really that bad?

Can Jesus turn my birthday cake into steak?

Good review, makes me excited to listen to this. You guys say its different but with the intimacy they
crafted each song on their EP I have confidence this will be a quality release

It's dull and miserable, when this band should be making music that's endearing and beautiful. I refuse to believe the same band who wrote Blood, one of the greatest songs of all time, put their name to this sepia snorefest.

I reckon that is why they have directed their music this way though. You probably know better than me DavID, yet maybe they didn't want to be stuck with the tag line of 'oh it's though's guys that sing blood', like i state in the review.

Anyway, "Also, does anyone else, at all, believe that "Ninth Avenue Reverie" could be the track of the year? It sounds like a lost, early-Dylan track sung by a less cartoonish Jim James."

It's a wicked song, yeah, I agree, but not the strongest on the album for me.

I agree about Blood; probably my favourite song of all time. But a song like that is never going to be repeated. They did throw in Months though - my 2nd favourite on the new album - that sounds somewhat Bloody.

Also, is there any reason why this album goes for at least twenty minutes longer than it needs to?

This album reminds me of a much grimmer, odder twin brother of The Avett Brothers' Emotionalism. I think, Atavan, that we shared the same, albeit for me illusory, initial opinion; this album is a tad too long. Upon my first two or three listens, I would find myself sitting in the silence of the conclusion, thinking, "Huh, that was really enjoyable. But, it was two and a half hours long." However, after a few more spins, the songs opened up and I found the undulation of the record, the way it flows and ebbs in a precise, yet organic, trickle indelible. What I mean to say is; sometimes works of art are best served by breathing room and space. Joyce's Ulysses[i/], Melville's [i]Moby Dick, and, of course, Tolstoy's War and Peace are often criticized for being far too long, yet they remain critical classics. Most readers have come to terms with the condtions of the bargain: a large portion of one's time in exchange for an immensely satisfying, uniquely rich experience that cannot be replicated in the brevity of a shorter piece. I think the length of I Want That You Are Always Happy provides the necessary space between the imaginary boundaries of opener and closer to allow a world of The Middle East's own reckoning to take root and sprout.
