I am fully intent on going down the chronological path. I love hearing progression and I have no doubt I'll be floored at some point. Started the second album and it is noticeably more interesting from the get go.

This is way way better than I remembered. I had this at a 2,5 and had to up it a full point. Its way better than World as law. In any case like others pointed out it's unbelievable how this band released Souls at Zero 4 years after this. Absolutely mind-blowing.

"Its way better than World as law"
I wouldn't say it's better but this is far more consistent for sure. Word As Law is definitely a transitional record featuring the first Neurosis song written by Steve Von Till "To What End?", which you can see influenced Scott Kelly (compare "Blisters" to anything here, for example). They carried that sound on Souls to perfection.
Also this is missing keyboards which is part of their trademark sound but then again it probably wouldn't have worked if they didn't alter their sound. Also I guess it was a good idea Dave stopped writing songs by himself lol

Word as Law is fantastic, it is transitional in a sense but it works and I love the combination. Really sets the scene for what was to come with Souls at Zero.

@Demon exactly right. it's that combination that makes it a very varied album, which is why I prefer word as law a bit more.
