I second that. Seemed a little inaccessible at first but the songs grew quite a bit.
As for the notion that everything that isn't Mindcrime is bad, that simply doesn't hold water. I've heard 4 albums/EPs from 1983 to 1994 besides Mindcrime. All quality material.

i have been a queensryche fan for long time,i saw them live for the first time opening for metallica on their ...and justice for all tour, and after that many times,last time, opening for maiden and priest....but now, i'm done with this band,i totally agree with the begining of this review, except that they're already death....long time ago.....

I quit suffering these guys after Empire. Everything just got too forced and cheesy IMO. Hit their peek in the mid- to late-80s and sucked ever since.

"Dedicated to Chaos" has really grown on me. Which is more than I can say for the abysmal "American Soldier."

I'm interested in listening to this just to see how bad it really is, first spinned Operation: Mindcrime again though.

Early Reich up through Empire rules hard Why don't people like Promised Land? That might be my second favorite Queensryche album (right behind Rage for Order).

Best laugh I've had with an album's lyrics for quite some time. They really haven't hit the 21st century yet.

@Willie
Thanks for the recommendations! I am familiar with all three bands, especially Porcupine Tree - I have their entire catalog and have seen them live many times. I think I got turned on to their stuff around the time Opeth's Blackwater Park was released.
I like SOME of the Fate's Warning stuff, but some of it is pants, IMO.
Riverside is the shit. I have a few of their records as well, but my favorite is probably Out of Myself, at least out of the stuff I have heard anyway. Great, creative band.
My favorite band to listen to at the moment is probably Amorphis, currently.
Anyway - back on topic for me. Against better judgment, I went ahead and grabbed tickets to Queensryche's House of Blues show in Boston. Not sure what I am in store for, but the tix were fairly cheap and hopefully they play some older tunes. Wilton is always fun to watch, and maybe I can hit Tate with a head of lettuce or something.
I tend to like most of their material up through Promised Land, which I feel is a great record, and the live show was stellar on that tour, as well.

Maybe it's just the strange way I perceive things, but I can see how the band turned to this. All the way back to Operation: Mindcrime, Geoff Tate's way of singing songs like Operation are kind of self-righteous. (Maybe that's not the best word to use, but it works.) It works on a lot of their prog-metal work, but trying to sound like a party band is just hilarious/and hard for me to accept anything else by them.
