i'm not just saying this because i live in lafayette and have met on occasion a couple of the givers but this album is all production. they are terrible live and the couple of interesting sonic ideas they have are wasted in a wash of whiny, overused cliches i've heard used way better by other bands their lo-fi genre.

But they're not lo-fi. I think you're missing the whole point... And yes, there is a fair bit of production values apparent here, but if that's how their recorded output is going to be, then so be it.
As for their live show, I have seen quite a few live clips on YT & seemed pretty good (& fun) to me. Admittedly not as polished as on record, but nor should they have to be. It's all part of the live experience. I know they also got some very positive reviews for their live show when they were in Australia in February.

That it is. But I find that even the more serious songs are awesome fun, just not stupid.

I know these guys as well because my best friend is good friends with the lead singers, and I feel the exact opposite as MusicJudas. I saw them at DeLuna Fest last year, and they're great live. The music infiltrates every bone in your body, and you can't sit still at all, and they even made time to hang out with us after the show.

I may grow to like it in time, but right now, the lead single off their 2nd LP is depressing me!

One word: Synthesizers.
Why would a band whose strength was their array of instrumentation turn to synths?
Sowing, stop talking up LPs that you rated a 3! :-)

So the singer of this band is featured on Little People's last album and the whole thing is bliss. For anyone interested, check "Skies Turn Blue".
