I could see this being an album where it is far less enjoyable for those who are very familiar with the material being recreated, and more enjoyable for those who have not listened to Serenades/Crestfallen/Silent Enigma alot.

Early era Anathema does nothing for me, but because of the comment above, I might check this out.
WHBWH was wonderful though, I doubt they'll ever top that.

These guys are lazy for quite some time now. They might take awhile to get things done, but they're not lazy.
I'm not particularly familiar with the older albums of Anathema, so for me this is just a very relaxing album with piano, string arrangments and some occasional guitar. If you focus on the music presented here, instead of constantly comparing it with the older songs, it's a pretty good album. I think QuestionableScum might be onto something, because I started out with Serenades and have grown with them through each album, so I can't detach the originals from these half-assed revisions.

Very nice review Trey. I should definitely look into this band more. I've got their last year's album, and although decent, it's not quite my taste. I should definitely get their earlier, doom-influenced stuff, though.

Serenades is an awesome doom album. The other few are more hit and miss (although a lot of people seem to like The Silent Enigma) too).
@Whispered4tw: Seriously, if you like this then try In the Nursery - Era. It's an awesome album that will probably blow you away.

Aw man and We're Here Because We're Here was such a masterpiece...
Anyway, great review man

I've always had a soft spot for these guys. I enjoyed We're Here so I'll give this a shot.

I liked We're Here... too, so I don't know how much bearing that will have on your enjoyment of this. I think that the biggest factor is what QuestionableScum mentioned -- how familiar you are with the source material.

They should make another doom/death album, Serenades was amazing

This is pretty good. Not great or anything, but it's good. Hadn't heard the originals, so I figure maybe I have a little bias removed. I've never wanted to listen to early Anathema because I hate doom, but maybe I'll give it a chance.

If you hate doom then you'd probably only like The Silent Enigma, but even that could be a stretch. Their best doom album (IMO) is Serenades and it is slow as fuck with death vocals.

My question to you is this: How familiar are you with the original songs?
|

I'm not familiar with any of the songs on this, they seem to be from the only albums I haven't checked out yet.
