serenades to me just seemed like the first my dying bride album but worse, doesn't really have a shred of personality to it

however, pentecost III and the silent enigma are pretty much unmatched in terms of style :]

Yea. The Silent Enigma has some of the best songs I've heard in my life: Restless Oblivion, title track and A Dying Wish. The only flaw is the middle tracks, which were composed already in the studio ahaha.

I can see the lack of personality on Serenades, but my biggest complain would be some of the songs dragging too much without any memorable moments (they die and sleep in sanity).

I wish people would get the idea of Anathema being a 'progressive rock' band out of their heads. Just because they sound a bit like Pink Floyd doesn't make them a 'prog' band. There is actually very little of that in their music. I think this album is fantastic. The culmination of all that they have worked on in the last few years but then I have been listening to a promo copy for about a month and it is a grower for sure.

This is certainly more original than their late 90s/early 00s albums but you can't deny their prog albums are really influenced by Floyd and radiohead
