From what I've heard, they're okay. I don't really understand what makes them so partticularly different from the rest of the other bands, or better yet - what makes them so great. They're pretty average judging from the 4 songs that I've heard, but nothing I would listen to frequently.

You're welcome, I guess.

Also, just a reminder that nobody in the US knows or cares about this band. The music hype machine is a one-way conduit, so far anyway

Well, their EP releases have gone unnoticed on iTunes, and I haven't really seen much about them in the media, except for this site =) I'm interested though, and want to listen to the full album.

Weird I always though US and Canada release dates were the same.

It is worth purchasing.

I listened to it a lot, listened to Radiohead for a bit, then went back and thank god I still love it.

It's a keeper, one of the best debuts ever

The real strength of this band is not the band itself, but Alex Turner. He has a real swagger to his voice. This Message Edited On 02.21.06

I saw this album only a few days ago, but I didn't pick it up. Now I wish I had. You're such a master storyteller, Iai!

sorry guys. But this album has nothing particularly special about it. i have heard a few rtacks and teh yseem to me to be the same. The fact that NME likes it and put it on a best album ever list or somethig above albums like The betales revolver is just sick. These guys make too much of a thing about being british and northern. But its not like they have social commentary or anything. They are no pulp or smiths(whom i also dont like but repsect their popularity) and are overpopular. Will ppl start writing songs that can havea broad appeal without making a big thing about where they are from. I'm form hull, I live in portsmouth. I dont mention that much in my songs, because that makes boring music. This Message Edited On 03.03.06

Although the music isn't what i usually like, the lyrics are probably the most witty and intelligent i have heard out of the British rock scene in a very long time.

Great review.

Agreed that Alex Turner is the strength

That NME top 100 was a pile of fuck

I disagreed with every single position. Some of it defied belief, you'd have to see the full thing to truly understand how retarded NME writers are

Yes, there is a lot of hype around this band but its for all the good reasons, definately album of 2006 so far and one of the best debut albums ever made..

Too early to judge the monkeys - great review, but for your repetitive links to Mike Skinner who himself is an overhyped Rap wannabe and you say his northern accent doesnt get irritating - that line "he's such a scummy man" really does get irritating! But none the less is a decent album 3/5!

Wow, this is the next best thing the UK has going for them? I don't think so. Sloppy guitars, boring songs and terrible lyrics do not a good band make. Maybe if they spent time working on their material instead of incessently paying homage to others (especially in their lyrics), they could have become something better. Saying that they're far above Hard-Fi and The Libertines is like saying that Creed is a massive improvement over Pearl Jam.. it's a non-sequitor.

Well-written review, though.

What?

You could argue Hard-Fi and The Libertines are a little better Arctic Monkeys. But comparing them to Creed and Pearly Jam? I dont know about that one.

When I first heard this album I thought it was terrible. It has grown on me... in a major way.
