Well the only really bad tracks here are With a Woman and Street Spirit. Concrete and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us are OK. Unremarkable, but acceptable. Plus, a 4.0 for me may generally have 3-4 weaker tracks, whilst remaining a solid album.
And wow, more than five negs, I feel like a YouTube ranter!

Whoa hold on a tic...That cover is fantastic!
| | | hi buddy
| | | im not your buddy, guy

No it's not. It sounds like a shitty Iron Maiden tribute band, which is very strange since they're covering a Radiohead song.

Where the fuck do you hear Iron Maiden in that song?
| | | I don't get why everyone is hating on the summary. Is this an elitist prick thing? Sure it was a failure at being clever... however, at least there was an attempt. Kid took a risk, get off his dick. And he didn't say it sounded like iron maiden, he said it sounded like a shitty iron maiden tribute band. Just saying...

The "kid" is probably older than you, but thanks anyway for the support
And yeah, the summary was tongue in cheek, but I thought it fitting, because The Darkness actually have been through hell these past few years. With that said, I KNOW they're bad puns, I'm the master of those ;)

R2R has no time to be Staff at the minute actually. It's probably a good thing I didn't make Contrib.
| | | I would say this is a mix of the first and second albums. Some tracks are similar in tone to the second album One Way Ticket (in that they feel slower or arguably less 'rocking'), yet it matches the debut Permission to Land in that its not over-produced. After a couple of listens to Hot Cakes, its a solid 4 out of 5 from me for the non-deluxe edition. The first song I listened to was Street Spirit, residing in the second half of the album-its been a fan favourite thats been played for so long live, and Id have to say that while its good, Id argue this studio version could have been slightly better. I would have liked it to sound more unique to The Darkness. I think as a result of 'Concrete' and this Radiohead track, I believe this new album to be the weakest of all three. The second half is less exciting than the first, so the review is pretty spot on. This is most apparent if youve bought the 15 track deluxe edition, arguably with the exception of the finale 'Cannonball'.. but why are most people hating this review-is it because the reviewer gave the album a positive rating? lol. If you want hate, google up the bbc review The reviewer claims the vocals are unlistenable-im pretty sure this wasnt the same bbc staff member that reviewed the first two albums. Many reviews of Hot Cakes claim that The Darkness need to watch out or theyll become a complete parody of themselves, but they said that the last time. With a vocalist such as Hawkins, it may be impossible to 'overdo it', so as long as the band can continue to write solid material, as they have on all three albums to date, that will never happen.
| | | Cool review. The Darkness made a great record this go around, IMO. I find this Radiohead cover pretty awesome. Check it our here! http://bit.ly/Skgxws
| | | Love this review! Keep it up! Also, did you know that at participating indie retail stores, they are giving out FREE patches with the album purchase?! You can visit The Darkness' website to find an indie retail store near you!!

@goddamn: I'd say the potential for self-parody is definitely there, and they fell into that hole on the last album. On this one, they seem to know they are considered a parody band and kind of roll with the punches.
And as for the second half of the album, it does have those two songs, but it also has Forbidden Love, perhaps the second best song on the record as a whole...
| | | @ReturnToRock: I think from day one they were considered a parody act by many, just by using that voice alone, lol The problem is assessing exactly where the band should draw the line, but then whether there should be one or not is all down to opinion anyway-once the majority of listeners have considered the comedy factor to have overtaken the song writing skills, the show may be up. The second album was arguably along those lines as it was more experimental, with the inclusion of piano, bagpipes etc, but I found it to be an enjoyable one. Some will note the obvious queen operatic vocals on 'blind man' to be complete parody, but parody is mockery, and when the band has always stated to be heavily influenced by Queen and such related classic acts, and meant it, it cant be considered one (although many Queen or classic rock fans will surely disagree). The band has always had an element of humour in there, we only have to read those lyrics to know that-but they knew exactly what they were doing at the time, and humour alone is not always mockery. It can be argued that in creating such tracks, they may be helping to spread the music of Queen and such acts to a wider and/or younger audience regardless of their intentions.
I agree, the first 8 tracks are great, but the remaining 3 tracks were slightly disappointing for me in comparison. 'Love is not the answer' is solid writing for the final track, but it just didnt feel like a great way to end the album.. in my opinion ;)
| | | For fucks sake, cut down on the verbosity
| | | Loving this album!! The Darkness did a great job on that "Street Spirit" cover. Has anyone here used the new interactive Hot Cakes app yet? Its so fun.. http://bit.ly/thedarknessapp
| | | The Radiohead cover is so good
| | | I knew I already said that but the Radiohead cover is beyond amazing.
The other songs are pretty lame tho.
