recoil, ignite is pretty good, surrender is boring, the hand that holds the truth is basically envy without their sense of melody (the best thing about the band) and the last rays is boring.

sigh. come on, mono, you're better than this. i think the last dawn fares better than rays of darkness but both records just come across as exceedingly bland.

i feel like you're missing the point with surrender and the last rays. they're supposed to be droney to the point where they are hypnotic. the kind of music that makes your mind wander as it falls into the background. i think those two songs are great experiments for mono. but they don't really hold up unless you're in the mood to space out. i think last rays is actually excellent and one of the most interesting songs they've ever done. do you listen to much ambient/drone music noctus?

i listen to a LOT of ambient/drone music. i HAVE an ambient/drone project.

i don't find them boring because they're ambient/drone. i find them boring because they just don't pull me in. admitedly though i prefer my ambient/drone to have more of a smooth, electronic sound as opposed to raw and brash so that might explain it.

incidentally i'm also working on an ambient/drone project. i have nothing to show for it yet though as i'm still getting to grips with my sound atm. but most of what i play is like your stuff but brighter, more reverb-washed guitar in the vein of the dronier works of hammock and good weather for an airstrike. i struggle to put stuff down though and stick with it. when i'm improvising i can make stuff i really enjoy and get really into it. but then when i hit record on my DAW i just end up churning out shit. im playing around with some of the darker, grindier stuff like bowed guitar and heavy distorted drone too, very much like the last rays, which is why i love that i guess.

anyway, maybe we can collaborate one day ;).

keyboard/synth samples, various audio samples i record with a shitty mic (recorded my fridge for track 2). tbh i forgot how i did a lot of these sounds, they were done in college in 2009 as background noises for a dead planet themed game that never came into fruition so i re-organized it all later on and just released an album. i think the original versions of these tracks were about 20 minutes each, just pieces of ambient background noise..

let me know if you ever want to collaborate, sounds like a fun little project!

oh so this was more of a one-off thing for you then?

haha i'm guilty of shitty audio samples too. what takes the cake for me is my recording of a men's room hand drier! it wasn't the dyson airblade though, i couldn't quite get the sound i wanted with that.

nah nah i will be doing more, i loved the process of recording surface and i'm honestly really proud of the album. i have done other aludra tracks but i haven't released them yet. made one called hypothermia which is far noisier and i mostly used my guitar sounds for that one.

my favorite shitty sample was me scratching rust with a knife and then slowing it down to literally 100 times the speed with paulstretch and using that in one of the tracks

sounds good, i look forward to hearing more. yeah it would be cool to collaborate. although like i said i'm really not far along at all. i got my first guitar for christmas last year and so have just been learning how to play since then really. so something like a collaboration would probably be further down the road for me. here's where i'm going to be putting stuff though, probably:

there's just one loop on there at the moment that i was improvising over and then chose to transfer to the computer (it's not really drone either, it was like my attempt at doing a lights and motion kinda thing), so i haven't yet got an actual song. and that "jonsi bow" recording was just a test recording to see if i could get a jonsi sound out of a bow i just bought. but soon, i hope to get my head down and write something substantial.

i like both samples - let me know if you ever want to collaborate! i'm a pretty awful guitarist myself so don't worry about your technical ability.

samples of everything i've done are here: https://soundcloud.com/joenoctus

if you scroll wayyyy down you can listen to a post-rock piece i also recorded in 2009.
