really what makes them progressive

progressive is the lamest word ever in music. you can't label a genre as progressive, and I dont see how "progressive" can even have a sound.

progressive is another word like "post" or "core". prog is just used as a way to be able to label bands that arent like the norm. dream theater are a metal band but theyre not the normal metal band so we slap the word progressive in front of metal. the word has been used for a long time, when bands like Camel, King Crimson, Gentle Giant, etc started playing different music than everybody else. and there is no such thing as a genre as just "progressive" , it has to be before another genre. i dont see whats so lame about using that wordThis Message Edited On 05.19.07

exactly, its very cheesy but very good. i think having mikael and devin as guest vocalists is what makes this album so great (even though they are only on a few songs). labrie doesnt do so bad on this eitherThis Message Edited On 06.15.07

yeah all the guest vocalists are great but those two stood out to me. the lyrics really help you stay listening to the album without getting a bit tired. only once or twice ive listened all the way through (only cuz i had to stop and go somewhere). im just waiting to see what arjen has planned next for ayreon

anyway, half of what makes this album good is the cheesiness.



You don't see too many albums that tell a story, nevermind the way this one does, similar to an opera, with the conversing voices, but with better music and vocals, or at least more interesting in my opinion. (I'm sure some people think opera is better)

On March 19th, 2008, Arjen announced a new Ayreon EP named Ayreon vs Avantasia to be released in the end of April.



This album completely kicks. A little cheesey, i guess you could say. I hate calling something that, but I guess if you're not used to the type of thing like dragonforce or something...you would call this cheesey.



However, cheese factor is kept relatively to a low IMO.



Forget the cheese factor and just buy this album. Every track except a couple i dont really like- are freaking fantastic. This album should go down in history as being one of the best prog albums of all time.



And as far as im concerned, there are too many dam sub genres to get upset about what's what. Alot of bands walk a very fine line inbetween genres or even on top of lines or switch even. Its ridiculous. So screw it, I'm callin em prog. I'll even go out on a limb here and say prog does have a sound...its called progressive!
