'I've heard the debut and whatever has been on the radio. His voice is annoying and they're not metal.'
There are different era's to Rush's music. You should give Signals and Grace Under Pressure a try....and no, they aren't metal! They are the greatest band on the planet and should be right up your alley.

Oh, and Counterparts.......I can see that being a Willie favorite as far as Rush goes.

Apparently I was editing my post while you were typing. Anyway, I've been told that about Rush and Iron Maiden. I went through Maiden's discography and found a few of their albums that actually lived up to the hype.
I'm just starting at the beginning of the Rush discography, the same as I did for Maiden.

Gauged on your tastes and in my opinion, you would like mid to late eighties through mid nineties Rush the best.

I listened to some of Clockwork Angels and his voice is a lot less annoying. I heard that tree song over 10 years ago and it was my first exposure to this band, and I've blown them off ever since. Mostly because of the vocals and the cheesy-as-fuck lyrics about the poor trees.

Are the lyrics cheesy though or do they symbolize another matter?....Some seem to believe so.....
Also, listen to Counterparts.

I heard it on the radio. I wasn't looking for deeper meaning. I was listening to the ballad of Chip and Dale.

Hehe, Neil Peart wrote a lot about sci-fi and fantasy in their earlier years. And Chip and Dale fled because they were scared.
