ye. Jammed this and then Spotify went and played through Asleep in the Downlights, and now I'm on to the Sleepover Series Vol. 1. Idk what to rate this on a first listen but it was really good.

Listened to "Maybe They Will Sing for Us" today. Wasn't really that impressed given it was basically just pretty sounding guitar delay for an hour :3 I'm finding I like Hammock when they make their songwriting a little more dynamic.

All Hammock is good Hammock, but yea that's my least fav too. My fav songs of theirs are all their styles blended into one. Like, Ten Thousand Year Won't Save Your Life, Dust In The Devil's Snow, Floating Away In Every Direction, Unspoken, among others of course.

basically agree with you Mongi. I like their later stuff more because of the better blending of ambient with post-rock/dream pop/shoegaze. And those vox in "Ten Thousand Year Won't Save Your Life" omggg.

honestly if this were a full length it would probably be their best LP. I keep forgetting this exists

I’ve been known as a Hammock detractor before but I checked this out on a whim and quite like it, it’s certainly nothing special or super interesting in the realm of ambient but it gets the job done with very pretty textures and good atmosphere. I think the absence of vocals helps for me, as well as the brevity since it can be easy to oversaturate on this kind of stuff. That said, which of their full-lengths sounds most like this?

Kenotic or Raising Your Voice, easily. There are vocals on various tracks on those two, but the style of post-rock that melds into a drone-y ambient found on this one is most apparent on those two. Everyone seems to like Raising Your Voice most, though I find it is too inconsistent to be anything beyond excellent (it is just that, tho)
That said, I’ve always thought Chasing After Shadows was their best LP. They begin to lean into the orchestral elements a bit there, but in a much more palatable way than the second half of their catalogue where every song ends in a distracting, overwhelming orchestral cacophony. Some of their most mature song-writing, and only three songs on that album have vocals, only one with lyrics

Whoops, missed that response! I've heard Raising Your Voice some years ago, thought it was fine (but definitely inconsistent/overlong, as you mention) but it may be due a revisit. Guess I'll check Kenotic as well, and you make a good case for Chasing After Shadows, especially since I tend to prefer ambient with more of a classical angle.
