X&Y was quite boring in the fact it didn't really do anything different, of course after that they changed quite a bit for Viva la Vida and so it felt less stagnant

I really don't see a "Terrible" album in Coldplay's discography. Maybe Mylo and Ghost are a bit weak, but still they are not terrible albums imo.

Hard disagree on not reaching their potential. 'Viva la Vida' is a sure sign of their potential, no doubt. That album is an adventure front to back, namely for its unconventional song structures in a largely structured genre, differentiating melodies with each track, varied instrumentation, and an absolutely incredible live show to boot.

No one's denying that! But as good as Viva la Vida is, I feel they have a lot more to give.

I feel your expectations are unreasonable then, and you should revisit older material instead of wishing they'll just release this 'masterpiece' based on your standards. Sounds like 'Head full of Dreams' is going to be their last and I'd be skeptical of it being the best of their work.
If it gets any better than Viva la Vida, I'd be very surprised.
