I've been a flylo fan since LA and i've enjoyed every new release so far but this was a big let down for me. It's boring, bland and even generic in some points... Maybe it's because I hate fusion jazz, i dunno. Too much thundercat, not my cup of tea.
The captain murphy features were both terrible. Maybe if I listen to this again the grade may come up to a 3, but that's it. Never catch me is sick as fuck.

Dev what's holding this back, in your eyes? The transitions and lack of continuity?

I get the feeling you're reading into this album a bit too much, perhaps? Like:
That Flylo's latest LP should find its title cut to ribbons with the terminality of an exclamation mark says a lot about the way Ellison has approached the subject matter at hand. It presents the impression of an irreverent remark, a curiously morbid reminder, that alternately seems fascinated by, and laughs at, the prospect of shuffling off this mortal coil.
Hmm, idk man.

in agreement with clercqie. the first sentence in particular feels like you're reaching. i don't attach much significance to something as arbitrary as an exclamation point. the second sentence is also sort of strange. in what way does it present the impression of an irrelevant remark?

I agree with that. it's not such a depressing vibe overall. the last track has the lines 'we will live on forever and ever'. the Captain Murphy/Snoop feature fits the irreverent description. Turkey Dog Coma is playful.
the Never Catch Me video - everyone is sad at the funeral service, aside from the deceased, who are ecstatic.
good review. love the way the fusion stuff ties in, the shorter tracks don't bother me at all as long as I listen to the whole album, nor does the imbalance of the frantic first few tracks and more subdued back half. my only complaint is that it clips.

New BBNG suffers from this as well. Kinda beating on a dead horse at this point...

it's only a fairly minor issue on this though to be fair - the dynamic range is okay. and i can happily listen to it on repeat. withholding massive rants on mastering.

"the difference is the clipping here is distractingly prominent"
definitely. and heavy compression is a staple of this guy's work, even in the mix stage, but I had no issue with UTQC. in any case, it's not a brickwalled mess like I saw some people saying on RYM. i was just a bit disappointed cos I read comments regarding the leak and was hoping it'd be fine on CD.

i listened to this 3 times through this morning and just cannot get into it. Some parts here and there that I dug but just not my thing at all.

First half is stronger than the other, but other than that, it's very solid

"Steven Ellison's body of work has always been defined by its exploration of life. From birth and existence, to the reaches of our imagination and our limitations; the identity of a town and that town's imprint on one's own identity, Ellison has, with a cataloger's fervor, attempted to chronicle the very fabric of the human condition."
well I've been listening to FlyLo wrong
