not a bad review, but you could've easily avoided 99% of the negs with a different summary

that summary is a bit strange to me, considering you gave it a 5. It doesn't fit in with the review to be honest man. Also that second paragraph, the part where you talked about the flaws of the album, if you're gonna mention that, certainly it wouldn't justify the rating?

I mean I can understand where you're getting at in terms of it being an 'introductory album' to those who aren't into the genre, and the reasons why it managed to reach so many and how it became a classic, but you criticized it a bit more in which made me wonder how this gets a 5 yet its considered an 'overrated classic'? It completely throws me off. Btw the replay value, and that's just me, but it isn't that low. I've jammed songs like The World Is Yours, Ain't Hard To Tell, and One Time immensely: this album does have pretty solid replay value.

I'm really sorry man, and I didn't want to but I neg'd this review. Not because you neg'd my Lupe review btw, because I appreciated your criticism and I embrace it, but I just can't wrap my mind on how this gets a 5 but the review sounds more like a 3. That baffles me to be quite honest.

Yeah lots of replay value, the more you listen the more you understand how it's such a classic

Yep, for me this is the greatest.

My main criticism with this review is that it seems preoccupied with challenging the belief that Illmatic is 'the magnus opus of hip hop', rather than actually focusing on the album itself.

While I agree that lyricism is an important, and fundamental, part of hip-hop (for what it's worth I think Illmatic is pretty strong in this area), I do think we should also place emphasis on other aspects such as flow and beat/sampling etc (which the review praises). I mean, if hip-hop is just about lyricism, why don't we all just go and listen to spoken-word then?

being a hip hop great in 94 and being a poor Negro with limited access to technology aren't mutually

exclusive. the point is they aren't cigar smoking Jewish billionaires like the other review said.

I don't see whats so strange about this, you can only rate in increments of 5, its not like giving something a 5 means you think it is perfect. It's closer to 5 than 4.5 though. Im probably just not using the word overrated correctly, I mean to convey that this album just isn't the best hip hop, meaning it is, literally, over rated.

Thats wasn't my point, the point was other hip hop classics succeed in every aspect whereas this one is sometimes lacking lyrically.

it seems you wrote this review just to put across the point that you think there are better hip-hop albums than this. why don't you just review the album on its merits, instead of how it fares relative to other albums? also,

"It excels in every tenet of the genre"

then you go on to criticize the lyricism

Lackluster lyricism indeed: "Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined", "No sign of the beast in a blue chrysler, I guess that means peace", "I'm takin' rappers to a new plateau - through rap slow / my rhymin' is a vitamin held without a capsule"

Re: your list

Fair enough, opinions and all that. I'm pretty sure Binary Star was like the second rap artist/group I ever got into actually after CYNE with that album. Wasn't into hip hop back then but just listened to those artists sometimes (getting into CYNE after enjoying Nujabes)

I'd be interested to see you argue why you think the 8 Mile Soundtrack is better than Illmatic

again, the album excels in lyricism but still has some faults in lyricism that other albums don't

have.

@manfromspace

the lyrics on 8 mile soundtrack have more substance than Illmatic. They tell a

better story. A lot of illmatic is saying somewhat mundane things in complex catchy ways, look at

the quotes of supposed great lyrics just posted:

"Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined", "No sign of the beast in a blue chrysler, I

guess that means peace", "I'm takin' rappers to a new plateau - through rap slow / my rhymin' is a

vitamin held without a capsule"

that first quote is just 20 year old Nas trying to sound smart, that doesn't mean anything 'life is

defined breh'

the second quote is cool imagery but still an example of what im saying

the third quote is 'im the shit, my rhymin is the shit'

... you see what i mean? its not that this sucks, at all, its just a lot of these rhymes are really

overrated, they sound good, especially at first, but really, relatively, they aren't exceptionally

skilled, like Big L or Eminem, or meaningful like KRS, or impressive-on-their-own like Immortal

Technique. its still classic hip hop though. I don't see what's contradictory about this review.
