I think the cleans are intended to be "lifeless" as if a chorus of dead are singing to you.. at least that's how i justify them and that mindset makes them enjoyable

These might be more subjective format criticisms but imo it looks better to use quotes for song titles and italicize album titles (also could get screwed up by Sputnik but Ivar has the ΓΈ character in his last name.)

Overall great review though! Pos'd

One Thousand Years of Rain is one of their best songs for vocals

I love Axioma Ethica Odini but what I heard of RiittiiR was disappointing by comparison. I'll stream this and see what's up.

"In Times" is more of a grower, awarding listeners who have the patience to endure repeated listens.

hasn't this only been streaming for half a day?

i mean, i've nothing wrong with impulsive reviews but claiming it's a grower after having it only a few hours is a complete contradiction

I explained that due to the sheer amount of material packed into each track, that you start to hear more and more things you may have missed with each listen. Been listening all day. This is how it worked with the bands past albums.

i realize that i'm nitpicking here but you could say this about nearly any album ever, the human mind is only able to discern so much at a time

and honestly if it only takes a few back to back listens to understand i don't think that really counts as a 'grower'. growers take time, not repeated listens, to grasp.

otherwise your review isn't bad but i feel it would have benefited from letting your thoughts mature more before writing. there's a lot of analysis (an admirable amount) but not really much in the way of interesting opinion.

I wouldn't class this as a grower either, loved it on first listen and I doubt there is much room for growth.

on first listen i'm not sure about this album though, they keep hitting great ideas and then just abandoning them for the sake of staying 'varied' and it's honestly a very alienating experience to listen to. there's some decent riffs here and there but they're far too lost in their own momentum to let the best parts of their music flesh out and flourish. every time i think i'm being pulled in it just does a u-turn and to me that's not what good songwriting is.

also yeah, clean vocals really aren't doing it for me (except for that really kickass moment in track 1 four minutes in - why doesn't he do more clean vocals like that?!)

i'll never miss an opportunity to say how much i think this band is overrated!

There are plenty of overrated metal bands on this site and I sure as hell wouldn't consider Enslaved one of them.

This pales in comparison to their last couple, but that's okay.
