Brendan, most of their closers are certainly better than Space-Dye Vest...

listened to the first couple of songs off of this, pretty good so far but doesn't have that wow factor like Metropolis II did for me

The first two songs are probably the weakest on here so not surprising

"listened to the first couple of songs off of this, pretty good so far but doesn't have that wow factor like Metropolis II did for me"
This is a completely different album to Metropolis. This is a darker, colder and a much more obscure album that does take a fair few listens to get to grips with. It's also much less showy than both Metropolis Pt. 2 and Images. I'd actually say it's one of their least accessible, but it's damn worth it given the chance.

it'll probably warm up on me after a while

It wasn't very hard to access for me. When it came out I was instantly drawn into the darker atmosphere and the more direct approach of the album. DT at its best.

The album REALLY starts to get good at Erotomania and never lets up.

Octavarium, Learning To Live, Trial of Tears, In The Name of God, Breaking All Illusions, and Finally Free are my favorite closers of theirs.

I don't like Lie much at all, but they're a great batch. Definately perfer the happy, cheesy and flamboyant vibe they have on Images though, they do it better then the majority of the 'downer' material here (minus Kevin who is brillant on here).

Yea I don't think anyone would deny that they're good at what they do. It's just in terms of enjoyment for me, this album takes it.

i'd say oct and learning to live are at least on par with sdv, maybe even finally free but the rest aren't even close. also breaking all illusions isn't a closer

lol I always forget about Beneath The Surface, so if Breaking All Illusions can't count then those would be my top 5 closers. SDV is good but doesn't touch my top 20 songs of theirs, it's not even really a DT song, it's all Kevin Moore. They also said they never would have put it on here if they knew he was planning on leaving.

doesn't matter, it is a dt song and one of my all-time favorite tracks by them even though (and probably even because) it's not a typical one for them

I thought the whole band helped write that one.

It was a passion project of Kevin Moore, look up the meaning of the lyrics, pretty weird and funny lol
True that it is still a legit Dream Theater song, it's just an odd one in their discography because only Moore wrote it. I do find it interesting and different, just not that amazing. It certainly beats nearly all of their 00's ballads though.
