"In the Nightside Eclipse is without question a serious black metal record because it was approached from a serious point of view, rather than from a perspective that is open or even welcoming to allowing free reign of every symphony within a thousand miles to join the party at the same time. "
I have read this sentence 5 times and I don't know what the hell it means.
Also, heard this on a snowy night in Norwegian mountains. Unfortunately, a couple of power lines went right by our cabin, making popping sounds whenever snowflakes landed on them. Not the atmosphere I was looking for.

I think the point is clear. It's not an album that lets the "symphonic" part of symphonic black metal rule the album and allow it to become cheesy and stupid.

This is the best example of a black metal album using a lot of synths in the mix of the instruments without it being overbearing, or as Crysis said, cheesy or stupid. That's also part of why it's the best symphonic bm

it's symphonic black metal, not symphonic black metal.

Yeah the synths play a support role which is how it should be.

Thanks, crysis.
Who the hell thinks these synths are cheesy? We must find them and sacrifice them.

synths in bm is always a bad idea but thank god on this they aren't that prevalent

Heh, I think there are synths on 90% of all bm albums I like.
My limit is at bm using orchestras. It sounds great in theory, but almost never works.

I know COF have a bad rep on here but I actually think they use synths pretty well, especially on their first three releases. Though some might argue that they're not even black metal, so might not be relevant.
I used to pretty much only listen to symph bm, mainly while in high school, but there's a whole another side to it with the classic bands like Darkthrone and Bathory that I can't get enough of now.

This and Anthems kick the shit out of all other symphonic bm

My first BM was dimmu borgir so I'm not totally opposed to synths but yea they aren't my favorite approach

They help the music here, rather than hinder. The opening to Towards the Pantheon rules.

In the 80s extreme metal with synths was seriously haram. But BM made them cool to use, possibly as part of some rebellion.
Making the keytar cool is still in metal's future.
