The best song on the album was "How Did You Love," in my opinion. Unfortunately for Shinedown, they cannot write a great album as a whole but can deliver decent singles.

'How Did You Love' is a jam. This album kinda grew on me for a bit, but it's still nothing more of a bunch of half-assed radio singles all crammed together.

That's what happens when you try to go modern. Personally, if bands like Shinedown and Linkin Park want to "age-up" their sound, they should try releasing an acoustic album. No one asked for a pop album from either of these bands. Truth be told, a vast majority of their songs sound a lot better acoustically with a string orchestra.

Agreed, if One More Light had been a fully acoustic album it would have been fucking amazing.

Not only that, but their discography could entirely be played acoustically and improve the song at the same time. Linkin Park and Shinedown are right in aging up their content. Not only are both Shinedown and Linkin Park older, but their fans are to. Most fans who have been following those acts since their debut are in their 20's and 30's now. What's baffling is how writing a literal pop album ages up your sound. Pop and maturity really don't mesh well together.

I disagree for the most part as I've enjoyed a fair amount of their more recent work - A Thousand Suns was excellent - but I'm more surprised you've disregarded Meteora in that statement, since Meteora is basically Hybrid Theory 2.0.

It's literally just a slightly heavier version of Hybrid Theory.

Thought you were referring to them in your comment in response to DropTune, apologies.

Does this then mean you think Shinedown tanked after their first album? What about Sound of Madness?

I was using Linkin Park as a comparison to Shinedown since both bands wanted to "age-up" their sound by releasing pop albums. In my opinion, "Sound of Madness" was Shinedown's best album overall due to "Sound of Madness" delivering what Shinedown is best at. However, the album felt slightly generic when it came to songs like "Boom-Lay" and "Sound of Madness" as well as a few others.

My standpoint on Shinedown lies in the fact my favorite song by them is "Through the Ghost." I feel it is terribly underrated by the fanbase, but Brent Smith treats the song with reverence. He does not play it often because the meaning is sentimental and does not want to tarnish its reputation. Shinedown is at their best with songs like "Through the Ghost," "Second Chance," "If You Only Knew," "Fly From the Inside," and "Save Me" because they deliver in terms of emotion and simplicity.

After watching their acoustic set in Kansas City a few years ago, I had a deeper understanding of their music and respected them a lot more, and the performance also serves as my main example as to why they do best acoustically. That style of performance allows the band to level with the audience, deliver a genuine message, and keep the audience entertained meanwhile aiming at a mature audience.

I'm really excited for the new album now, Human Radio is a great song, at least the second half.

Honestly, some of these other songs could have worked with better production. "Oblivion" and "How Did You Love" come to mind. "Cut the Cord" had the production down pat, the rest didn't.

Album is... fine. It does exactly what it sets out to do by offering a bunch of easily accessible radio rock tunes.

It just seriously lacks substance as a result.
