"I saw her live last earlier this year. She was a nervous wreck on stage and tried to scream sometimes and it was very uncomfortable to watch. Also the songs weren't even recognizable from the studio versions aside from lyrics."
I actually saw your list TheGreatQ and while initially surprised, I'm not shocked. If you listen to her debut EP, it hinted that deep down she's an emo chick at heart. I think I recall an interview where she said she was brought up on punk & grunge... in Tennessee, of all places!
"You guys should definately also check out her other 2 EPs. Both really good."
I don't thin they'll be for everyone, but they put a lot of things in context.
"Oh, I love "Make a Shadow", especially "Heart Heart Head" because I always forget that she bursts into high-pitched screaming at the end and I only remember when it just so happens that I'm listening to it at work."
Quite surprised that either that tune or 'Go' wasn't included here.
"Yikes DaveyBoy, I just looked up the lyrics to Lemon Eyes and you're right. I guess lyrics aren't her strong suit?"
Actually, I disagree. The lyrics are very good for the most part. I think that song was always gonna be a single, so other factors were a priority.
"Is this the next fempop artist sput's gonna go nuts all over?"
No, because it's me leading the band-wagon. Hehe.

"Didn't expect to like this as much as I did, Motel and Desire are great jams. Record gets creepier and creepier as you go on, though... Great review Davey!"
Thanks elcrawfodor. Creepier wasn't the word I was gonna use, but whatever it is, I like that fact.
"Definitely agree with the comparisons you made in the review, but I'd add NIN in there as well."
Wasn't the 1st act that came to my mind & a bit exaggerated, but not necessarily silly.
"I will say, I think the album works best when she's doing the stripped back acoustic stuff"
I don't disagree with that general comment, but I don't think she quite got the mix right here... or maybe the track ordering. It leaves the latter half a little too sparse imo.
"The sample in "Motel" felt a bit forced the first time I heard it, but the key change that follows it awesome and makes it feel like it does serve a purpose. I think that song is great."
Agree 100%.
"I'd like to hear more aggressive stuff like "Go" from her last EP, but judging from its exclusion from this album, it seems like she's not into making that kind of music at this time."
I agree again. Wouldn't rule out anything for her future though.

davey i have one question and one question only
is this actually good pop
or is it sputnik good pop: cute pop vocalist with like 2 decent tracks on an otherwise terribly average album overrated because of trends and boners
if its the former i'll check it but if it turns out like the latest Zella Day or Carly Rae Ima be str8 chapped m8

Was gonna plead the 5th Potsy, but since we'll try to get around the "2 decent tracks" issue you have, here is the 3rd best: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8imFxu4Jbo
If you like it, then you're sweet. If not, you've only wasted 4 minutes & 27 seconds.

im all for some good modern pop seriously its just that is seems that peoples standards for pop around here have gone to shit lately. like Karin Park released the pop album of the year back in March and it is being completely overlooked here yet that new Carly Rae is popping up every single day and that album is like 60% bad / 40% above average pop.
So yeah each time i see a review for another strong 2015 pop release i have high hopes that it will out do all the average ones stealing the show this year. i'll check this song in a minute
|
| |
i don't think you'd like this album honestly but it's not particularly long so might as well check

"actually i quite like this song davey."
Well, there you go, you'll like 3 songs at least! Just don't listen to Wolfhorde's rating for the title track (which is embedded in the review for your listening pleasure).

I just realized Ive heard this girl before. Her voice is really recognizable

Now the tough part of trying to recall where it was you heard her.
Oh, and can someone put me out of my misery: The piano melody in 'Parade' is similar to that in another (I think well-known) song... But for the life of me, I cannot place it..........

I figured it out actually, I heard Monster. I had just remembered it by 'that one video with the chick who had a gruff voice who had really hard nipples' tho
Anyway this is probably the sexiest album Ive heard in 2015 so far
|

Album Rating: 3.8
Oh yes, 'Monster' from her debut EP. That song was almost normal. LOL at your recollection of the video.
Some people do find "I'm gonna skin you with my tongue" as sexy. Others might expect it on an episode of 'Hannibal'. LOL.

Im really not digging lemon eyes or make a shadow

I kept changing my mind on both 'Make A Shadow' & 'The Morning After', 2 of the EP holdovers. They're both solid album tracks though. 'Lemon Eyes' is your typical immediate single though, so I doubt that will grow on you if you didn't like it on 1st listen.
