The solo on Desire is mind boggling, does she herself play it?

It's a good solo but not mind-boggling.

She's an interesting music act. Her music's good too.

I don't mean technicality wise, it just literally came out of nowhere and it happened to be way above average.

I wish I knew the answer to that question, but I don't. She definitely plays guitar on the album though, I'm just not sure about that solo. It was definitely the least expected thing on possibly the least expected song... & yet, it works. In a nutshell, that's what makes her - as Mike stated - interesting.

I think Andy Rosen plays the solo and most of the instruments on the album. They both share writing credits and she has performing credits, beyond singing, as well. I think they make a good team. She has a great voice and really interesting influences. Judging from some of the other stuff I've heard from Andy, he's a very good producer and musician with the same not super poppy/mainstream influences.

It's a good review. Not sure I would like this from hearing the samples, but I like discovering new artists.

Loved Desire when I used to hear it on Pandora's Alternative station. Listening to this now, love how dark it seems to be.

Kind of wish she would have included Heart Heart Head since she included other EP carryovers on here.

"I think Andy Rosen plays the solo and most of the instruments on the album"

I looked into him & couldn't really work out what instruments he could play, or whether he was more of an electronica producer.

"This chick needs more attention"

I've tried.

"It's a good review. Not sure I would like this from hearing the samples, but I like discovering new artists"

Thanks mvdu. If you don't like the samples, then that probably says you won't like the LP as a whole.

"Loved Desire when I used to hear it on Pandora's Alternative station. Listening to this now, love how dark it seems to be"

Agreed. I'm sure many will want her to go even darker, but I think she needed to find the balance that she has.

"Kind of wish she would have included Heart Heart Head since she included other EP carryovers on her".

Agreed. That or 'Go', just to balance the grit/ballads ratio a little more evenly.

When a repetitive refrain actually works.

I have to say this is a lot less... quirky than I was expecting based off this thread. It's certainly interesting but for the most part it's just really well-executed pop with the occasional twist

I don't know, I can respect repetitive refrains but it took me longer to remember the chorus line than the verse line for Desire. Not that that's a bad thing; its a sweet song but it probably loses potential airplay because its not terribly catchy

Ugh I hate it too when my pop songs have repetitive refrains that are more memorable than the actual chorus

"Quirky" may not be the correct word Rowan, but I couldn't think of another one. "Twisted" came into play, but I thought that was too psycho.

I don't think 'Desire' is meant to be catchy. But I disagree about the refrain not being memorable. Of course, hat might be because I thought of a different answer for every time she said it. ;-)

I just like the original approach she has to songwriting. While most of these songs are certainly radio friendly, they still sound different than the majority of the music you would hear on modern pop stations.

She has also stated many times that she never want's to do the same thing twice. I would expect her next album to sound much different.

Only gripe I have with the album is the track listing. Putting "I really want you to hate me" and "Parade" back to back sort of let's the album lose a little momentum. They aren't bad songs but are just a little too dramatic/slow I guess.

You're welcome Sowing. Glad you found your way here, as I've been meaning to shoutbox you about this.

Fair call TTD. It seems to be a common happening re: track ordering nowadays (or maybe it's always been that way). I don't necessarily mind the better songs/singles on the front half, but I think you hit the nail on the head with the tempo point.
