Mainstream pop is good when it's fun and bangs
And not good when it isn't those things.

This being my first foray into Holter's music, I can't say how this stacks up to the rest of her discography. That said, genuinely enjoyed this album. Several listens deep and it's still satisfying. Great review of a great record.

That's a pretty narrow overview...the best pop isn't fun/bangin, that's the most entertaining. The best pop is the best pop, and from the sounds of it, this might belong in the conversation (still have to listen in full).

I don't think cyg is implying that the best pop is characteristic of mainstream pop

"i hate to start up this argument, but it seems like people who are bashing this with the prior context of loud city song are doing so mostly because they think this should have been some grandiose avant garde statement as well, instead of the blissful pop album it is (but it's so, so much more than that. holter is still challenging pop norms and making something wholly unique here). the way people are going on with comments like 'predictable and boring pop formula' make it seem like their contention lies more with pop in general than with holter, because, let's face it, this certainly isn't predictable or boring or even formulaic. if this is what comes to mind when you think of generic pop then i'd hate to read your thoughts on mainstream pop stars"
You and some other people already been over this in the other Holter thread, but I just want to reaffirm, that I have no problem with the direction she went in. I didn't compare this to "Loud city song" because I think the style is inherently inferior. In fact I actually hoped that she would be doing something a bit more polished.
My problem with this album is how almost every song is so boring to me, that I want to skip it at the halfway mark. Other people described the whole thing better, but I just can't find any interesting melodies, the times were the instrumentation becomes anything different then standard she immediately drowns it out with her voice... I just didn't enjoy it for what it is. The last 2 songs are a bit better, but that's basically it.

Finished this and it's pretty stunning. Hard to tell whether or not it will really resonate with me long-term, but I'm betting it will.

see this might be a reasonable assumption if it werent for the fact that its a false assumption. i, for one, enjoy a lot of various kinds of pop, including some mainstream pop, and secondly it.sure.as.fuck.IS.predictable.boring.AND.formulaic.
