this is a good review, my friend. i can tell you put a lot of work into this, and i feel like any particular quibble here would run the risk of undermining that fact. you have a knack for putting common thoughts together in a way that lots of people can relate to, i think, and that's a very valuable trait to have when discussing something like music. even if all of us have different tastes, the cool thing is that if someone can explain to me why i should give one of my least favorite albums another chance then i'll feel compelled to do so!

something minor that could help make your next review even better might be shortening some sentences when you can help it - i say this because i know i struggle with it. (i mean look at the sentences in this comment omg.)

for instance:

"Having dealt with weight issues, drastically losing weight in my College days thinking that would solve my depression issues but being helplessly lost without an answer, lines like “Thinner at the waist line, I feel thinner at the waist line, I’m getting old in the face but every day there’s another new line” left me cathartically reevaluating my past. I have no idea what Getz had in mind when he penned these lyrics, what past events or creative force caused him to come up with these combination of words, but the beauty of art and music is that interpretation is in the eyes of the beholder and I was able to find a deeper meaning within myself and my own experiences."

these are v important thoughts for yr review and i think if they had more space to breathe, they could resonate even more deeply w/ the reader!

good work, brother. i'll see you in another life eh ; )

Thanks man, I appreciate the criticism. I pumped this out in about an hour late at night while drinking a couple beers. Def agree I should have expounded on some important thoughts but I kinda also liked the idea of typing words like crazy late one night and running with it. Some passages could be expanded and I did swap out some repetitive words I found a few hours after I posted this. Def check out this record!

some of the best personal reviews are done so like that - sitting down and getting it all out in one go. it feels more spontaneous, but still supplemented by the months you've spent listening to it. it'd be easier to criticize this if it was a regular weekly review type of deal, but it's more than that. it's special to you and tbh it's not worth messing around with too much

really great review man, you should use this as a stepping stone to get more involved. site could use more writers

i agree with jacob's comment above, some of these sentences could use a little bit of unpacking to really hit home harder. not that they don't already do that, the personal aspect of this review is on point and connects to the lyrical themes well. a couple things i would consider avoiding next time: you tend to maybe over-use descriptive adjectives, something i'm guilty of as well. not every word needs a modifier and i think writing that breaks that up makes those modifiers that remain stand out and is punchier. sort of as the flip side to that, some of your descriptions are sort of vague/bland - saying something adds "character and atmosphere" doesn't really tell the reader much. elaborate on what the character is, how the tone transforms the atmosphere into - something, some feeling, etc. i'd also avoid some of the more on-the-noise metaphors like "my musical thirst is unquenched," but with practice you'll avoid some of the more banal phrases.

overall tho really solid review, can't believe you don't write more.

Fantastic review Jimbo. Nicely structured, well-balanced in terms of general & specific thoughts, and it reads/flows well for the most part (the occasional overlong sentence being the exception).

Of course, personal reviews such as this can't be trotted out all the time... But you don't trot out reviews regularly anyway. So, for what this is, I think it's excellent.

PS: Your 1st paragraph is not too dissimilar to an idea I have for a potential 'Sputnik Discusses' blog in the new year.

Great fucking job Jim.

Incredibly personal album for me too, perhaps the most in the past 5 years, due to the year I've had. Sure it has a flaw or two, but its a 5 for me too.

Thanks Dan, and I completely agree, far from a perfect record but it has had enough of an effect on me that I feel it more than justifies a 5.
