The Light and Shade of Things is one of this decade's greatest songs.

It's sitting in my Top 3 (unfinalized) for sure. Anathema might be them out.

WHBWH?

This is good, liked it a lot more than Darkness In a Different Light which I found mostly boring. The closer on that was great though

No, my number one album was Weather Systems and this was a close second.

Can you name another band as good as this late in their career?

Not just this good this late in their career, but also on an upward trend. Because I'd say Testament is still pretty fucking good, but not really trending upwards. Other than that, I can't think of a single band.... well, Anathema, but they're not trending upwards either and they're about a decade newer.

I also would add Death Angel and Prong. They have decent records lately.

I was never really a big fan of either of those bands. I mean, Sepultura is trending upwards with their new album, but only because they've been so average for so long.

"Upward trend" is the right way to phrase it, but as we know Jim is allergic to composing bad music.
I don't know many bands that have consistently released quality material for 30+ years
I haven't properly heard Death Angel or Prong, but I checked a few songs from the latest Sepultura and they were cool. Need to dig in properly eventually but haven't been in that mood lately

Fates Warning is proving to be the fine wine of progressive metal

Album Rating: 5.0
In terms of consistency and quality over such an extended period of time, Fates is the biggest fish in the prog metal pond imo

Matheos is such a great lyricist as well. Underrated in that department
