"this is an ill informed review btw. devin said multiple times that this album will be the last and final one in this style.

he also stated that trancendence is more about the message and the lyrics than the music itself so take from that what u want."

This is all well and good, but when did he say this would be the final one in the style? I normally read what comes out of his facebook, but I'll admit I really haven't had time to read everything he's had to say about the album. I also wrote this without the benefit of the liner notes that have been discussed.

In either case, it seems like Dev and I agree this should be the last album with the Project sound (or what's become of it), so there ya go.

The album is really long and hard to get through for me and I honestly remember almost nothing about it despite having listened to it a lot. That's where bloat comes in. *shrug*

I don't really get the issue with the length. Sure it's over an hour but most of Dev's albums are around the same length tbh and no one ever seems to complain about it. I think people seem to have a problem with the overall pacing, which is understandable.

I don't really have any desire to listen to this. Failure jams but Secret Sciences was so boring.

yeah this just sounds like it'll be epicloud pt 2 only with more djentiness, no thx

(please don't crucify me for even remotely associating devy with djent)

I was afraid of this being unbearably overwhelming but I enjoyed my first listen more than I expected. I'll come back for sure

Dev doesn't really djent and this album isn't really as similar to Addicted, Epicloud or Sky Blue as many are making out.

The bonus disc has some gems on it. It's easy to forget how varied his songwriting is when his albums are generally quite thematically focused.

I only really liked the 3 singles. After that it all kinda drags. The way "Higher" is chanted is annoying, but it still has that really beautiful moment towards the end. Stars and the title track weren't anything too special. Offer Your Light helped pick the pace back up so that was nice. From The Heart was promising until it got repetitive. And the Ween cover was good but I hate when tracks that are 8 minutes have more than half of that length being nothing. I was excited to see what else he would have done with the song, but it was just a standard cover, not that that was a problem but 8+ minutes made me think there would be more. I'll definitely listen again but a 3 sounds right now. Granted I didn't care for Secret Sciences much on my first listen but really dug it now so we'll see what happens. I was really excited for this too since it seems to be getting tons of praise.

@atomic waste ye i too would agree that this should be the last one in the style. in the liner notes he wrote that it would be the last one and i think i read it somewhere else in an interview or something.

Alright, it's growing. Everything other than the chanting sections of Higher are outstanding...which is a shame because I swear they take up half the song.

Interesting about the potential darker route in the future. I always said I was happy with Dev never going back to the darker side of things because it would be forced as he's not in that place mentally anymore but if he's naturally written a song like that then I'm looking forward to hearing it

Excellent review, and I absolutely agree.
I remember feeling so much excitement on the run up to Deconstruction and Ghost and how much those albums (including Addicted) impacted myself at the time, but then a little over a year later, Epicloud completely let me down and the last two albums have been no different. This isn't a bad or even an average record, but there aren't any tracks that will keep me coming back to the record.

The quality over quantity in the early days was a landmark for Devy.

This is great but still a bit too long and self indulgent.

Most of the records I've heard from him are achingly long and indulgent, and I love Ocean Machine, Terria, Casualties Of Cool and Ghost a lot. That's why Addicted was so awesome, it was a lot shorter and less indulgent. Not to mention how incredibly fun a listen it was.

Ghost is such a snooze fest.
