Fantastic record. Great to a see a band taking a very natural course throughout their career, continually maturing, building on their past work and becoming more mainstream without bastardizing their core sound, a rarity I feel like these days. Also, if you get a chance see them live, they put on a fantastic show with lots of energy.

It's crazy they can so easily perform both an heartfelt acoustic set and an energetic rock performance interchangeably well. I think that's rare to find these days as well.

I wouldnt say theyve "bastardized" their core sound but instrumentally this is the least interesting Menzingers yet.

They're all in their 30's now, they're not the same angsty kids who pumped out Chamberlain Waits, it's only natural for punkish rock band like them to have their sound become more mature and tame over the years, and for their dip in angsty screams and faster riffs, they have been replaced in spades with better lyrics and still catchy as ever riffs. Plenty of other bands have thrown in the towel, tried continuing their immature sound of yester years or have mid band crisis of reinventing thier sound to no avail, I'm very happy with where The Menzingers have progressed.

And another note, God damn are The Menzingers flawless at picking album openers. Each of their records I just have to toss on for a few moments of the opening track and immediately I'm hooked for the rest of the record.

Also I caught a mistake in the review!
Sparse comforting percussion gently holds the listener's the hand
You just repeated "the" remove the second one, other than that great review!

Opener to this is probably the worst on here tbh. It's still a pretty good song but i can't say i enjoy it as much as the rest of the album

I wouldn't put it in my top tracks on here as well but it sets a great tone for the record.

I wouldnt say watering down your songs is "maturity." Theyre just playing it safe, theyre writing whats comfortable and fun. a lot of artists stop challenging themselves later on in their careers. The lyrics are more mature but the songwriting has taken a blow in favor of being catchier.

I could listen to lookers and after the party, every day for forever. This thing is killer.

I'm on my 6th listen and what pops out to me the most is that on Rented World it seemed like they were trying very hard to mature and make a mainstream rock record, and the record in turn lacked some of the youthfulness and honesty their earlier records had. This record reeks of insecurity and honesty along with a ton of passion that seemed to be missing to a certain degree on Rented World.
