I see the Julien Baker reference, but I think it's a little harsh to compare the two artists: it doesn't seem to me that Cameron Boucher's at all attempting to emulate her. I'd also rather listen to her, but that's because I think she's a better musician. The Hotelier comparison feels a little weak, too. (Side note: as much as I love Julien, she wasn't that amazing a singer on Sprained Ankle. I prefer her as a vocalist, but at least Cameron hits most of his notes on this.) Just think the thesis of this review is a little unfair. Whilst the point that the references remind you of better music is pertinent, that the band is trying to "stand on the shoulders" of the references artists isn't a good point of criticism IMO, particularly when these themes and references are more lyrical than anything else.

I could be wrong, of course. Really well-written review as usual. :]

"You’re Not As ___ As You Think feels like the conclusion to something that was never started in the first place, it hasn’t earned any of the things it takes without asking"

This is so harsh yet so fair. There's too much pain here and not enough songs. Their first album had this "isn't it so silly to be THIS depressed all the time" attitude, laughing at itself even as it talked of ending it all. Now that attitude has gone it's just too unpleasant a listen. I feel bad for the personal stuff the guy has gone through, and I saw them live at the start of last year and it was still a good hour, but these releases are no fun.
