Boney,
I definitely think there's some fat the needs to be cut here. Think this would work better as a nine or ten song album for sure. I also think it would allow the production to not appear so monotonous on a surface level. And lyrically it would probably remove some redundancies. You're really talking me into this idea the more I think about it actually

I'm not expecting much from this album, but I'll still give it a shot. This is just one of those artists that I don't get the hype for.

Album will prob be a 4 / 4.5 for me.

I agree plane, I really like the last two sentences.
Con I see where you're coming from (and klap can of course defend himself) but I would say that there's a difference between a 3 written as "hey guys here's a pretty good album" and a 3 in this case where it's a highly anticipated album that fell short of expectations and appears to have a lot of flaws while still being good overall. Klap isn't really trying to convince anyone to listen to this here, FJM's well enough known at this point that pretty much anybody listening to this has heard or at least heard of him.

If I feel about this album the way I have about his previous releases, I'm guessing a 2.5-3 for me.

yeah agreed man it's really just a difference in reviewing styles, not really trying to criticize it. And as someone that liked FJM's last album but doesn't consider himself as a "fan" of him this review deterred me a bit but who knows maybe I'll check it eventually

the cover art of this pairs really well with the hissing of summer lawns art

I actually think this review sells the record better than your typical "meh" 3. klap describes it as a peculiar and interesting 3 (I hold the same opinion) and would have encouraged a listen had I not heard it before.

Strong 4.5 from me.
Father John Mistey just can't make a bad album.

One of the better reviews I've read here in a while. Really good analysis and you put into words what I've been thinking for the few months that material's been coming out.
I really like Honeybear but he wore thin on me on that record. Here he just seems like the Dan Harmon of indie rock, so exhaustingly self-aware and self-referential that it's tough to glean anything meaningful from it.

So how much did this guy contribute to Fleet Foxes being good? Does it matter that he's no longer associated with them?
