To each their own, gorgeous and mysterious may be the last two adjectives I'd pick to describe the track, maybe superfluous and daft.

haha I actually get more lost in this version than the LZ one, so maybe there's just something wrong with me (not maybe, it's been confirmed over and over by my divergent taste and confusingly contradictory ratings).

Only song I really, really, really like is 3WW.

No. 2 and 5 are run of the mill alt-j material, 6-7-8 are...eh. I don't know what they wanted to achieve with 4

I have no feelings for 3

I wish they went ballistic instead of minimalistic, ya know...

3WW is the clear standout for me. In Cold Blood is pretty textbook Alt-J, but in a good, super fun way. The rest is inconsistent quality-wise, but I enjoyed some of it.

this is closer to This Is All Yours than to An Awesome Wave

It's like this Is All Yours but more random, and experimental - but also with higher peaks

I like experimental but is this at all like their singles like left hand free? that song singlehandedly changed my status from fan to unfan of this band

Just give it a listen, it's a short album and the musical styles are all over the place in a sort of good way.

Middle run of songs are a mess but the last three are so enchanting that it makes up for it. And none of this is bad, except for the long outro of "...Snare."

Eh some of this sounds really bad and amateurish to me. Some of the tracks just seem like a senseless wall of noise, trying to make a grand presentation without much of a direction, cohesion or melody.

I think the amateur sounding qualities of this band are kind of charming, I almost get the sense that they're purposefully that way. Alt-J clearly know how to execute a lot of sounds and are more interesting and experimental than a lot of indie pop. The more hard-hitting moments are all the weaker moments on this album though, like the outro of "...Snare," but they're usually pretty enjoyable aside from that.

I have no idea why they covered "House of the Rising Sun," but they did a fantastic job with it and fits with the rest of this.

No, House Of The Rising Sun is the weakest link on this album and a muddy, boring cover either way.

They made it their own by dumbing it down to a generic and unsuccessfully dramatic indie folk pastiche. Fantasy movie trailer background music that sounds fine when it's a trailer indeed but not here.

I could see that. this band has always been way too pretentious

Sure they're pretentious and very quirky, but it's a rare case that it doesn't bother me because the songwriting is so good, at least most of the time.

I've yet to see anything from them off their past 2 records that demonstrates amazing songwriting, if anything I feel like they're the musical equivalent of looking at an abstract painting with random scribbles and lines and I'm supposed to believe some deeper thought and technique went into this "masterpiece". Just because it's off the wall and different doesn't mean to me that it says anything worthwhile about their skill at composition. If anything a lot of this comes across as gimmicky and forgettable, the orchestra use alone on this record to me feels like a useless wall of noise that never develops into anything worthwhile other than for a cheap grandiose effect.
