Don't really understand the love for the t/t tbh. It's alright. It ends well. But it takes a while to get going.

really? flies by for me, it's a great set up for the track. it's the whbwh/ws/ds formula refined to a pinpoint, and it totally eschews the obnoxious, saccharine feeling that was rampant on weather systems.

idk about that - I'd say it's actually one of their weaker full-lengths - but it's still really good.

"i do like this album, but i don't really feel like it has quite enough substance or meat to it to compare to distant satellites and whbwh. some of the songs seem to fizzle out just as i'm getting into them (wildfires, close your eyes, back to the start), some tracks feel far too 'by the motions' (can't let go), some tracks feel completely useless or i just don't like (san francisco, leaving it behind)..."

Ah dammit Noctus, I tend to agree with you on most Anathema albums and kinda saw this coming. Still looking forward to hearing it though

What are the songs sampled in the opener? I can pick out Auld Lang Syne but that's about it

I hope so! It's too easy to pun on the title here, but I have...positive hopes for it.

It's good, definitely a worthy Anathema release. It just lacks any real knockout tunes. Most of the album ranges from OK to pretty good. I don't think anything here qualifies as revelatory, pinnacle-level material.

They have really got into a groove that deepens to a rut at times. The songs shiver and sigh but lack that gutting, visceral emotional punch they had throughout most of their career (and was also noticeably absent on the last album, too). Also a lot of sameness within the album as a whole, which is good (consistent) and bad (gets predictable and/or boring at times).

Enjoyed the electronics on Leaving It Behind, I was kind of hoping they would go more in that direction to be honest.

Endless Ways I really enjoyed, how it changes rather suddenly from a gentle, stripped-down ballad into an epic, driving tune.

Springfield is good albeit a bit familiar-sounding, reminds me of the Natural Disaster era stuff (which I think is their best album, with WHBWH and Weather Systems just a hair behind).

Can't Let Go is fun and fast. A welcome new style here.

Back To The Start I really like - everything about Anathema I love is present. The closest on the record to that visceral emotional punch I mentioned earlier.

All the other tracks - Ghosts, Close Your Eyes, Wildfires, The Optimist all have a beautifully dreary sound that meanders on and on, lots of sighing and moaning, minor-key piano, strings, and guitar/drum jamming with no big hooks - good background music but I tend to skip them in headphones unless preoccupied with something.

Overall 3/5, or 6.5/10. Good enough but as a massive, massive Anathema fan I was a little disappointed (probably unfairly so, it's an expertly-written & produced, very pretty and melancholic record).

I like Lee's vocals, but why the hell would you reduce Vinny's vocal presence so significantly
