Starting to think ‘Kiss it Off’ and ‘Touch’ are their two best attempts at a pop song yet...album is growing back on me again a little

‘Sweet’ is a better pop song than both of those.

Sweet is a nice tune but it’s not a pop tune to my ears - sounds like dream pop
Those two off the new one have choruses that could be sung by Taylor Swift...only they’re now sung by the Twin Peaks house band

Spun the new one for the first time today as my introduction to this band - it was snowing at the time and there was a light but fresh blanket of snow on the ground. The music fit the surroundings perfectly - the stuff of some of my most fruitful first listens.

Man, would’ve recommended trying this one first but if I’m being honest the new one is basically the same album as this and I would probably like it a lot more of I had heard it before this so it doesn’t really matter.

I mean I probably should've checked this one first but at WUML we're required to have at least one-third of our playlists consist of music that's been released within the past three months, and Cry fits the bill in that regard ¯_(ツ)_/¯
I've also been craving some ~dreamy~ vibes lately and Cry hit that sweet spot too.

Yeah I checked out both their albums just a couple of weeks ago at a time when I unknowingly wanted to hear this kind of music

Both their albums are almost equally good so no problem to start with either Dyl

Good to hear Doof - so I didn't necessarily make the wrong decision by starting with the new one.
"Touch" is an earworm and a half, "Don't Let Me Go" is perhaps wedding-worthy

‘Touch’ is one of the best, like a slowcore version of a girlband hit

Update: I played "Touch" on the radio today :D
Checking this now
EDIT: oh man "Opera House" is something else

Apocalypse, Each Time You Fall In Love and Opera House are the classics

Worst lyricist of the decade and I say that as someone who's been subjected to multiple Chainsmoker songs

@Doof: The run from "Opera House" to the end actually tickled my fancy the most on the first go
@Slex: idk some of Greg's lyrics are pretty charming in a fucked up, voyeuristic way. Give him credit for pulling off "I know full well that you are the patron saint of sucking cock"

Man sput is blatantly lying with the new one sitting on a 2.9 average, like come on fam
Having now listened to this here debut I'm convinced I was correct in starting with the newie - which one I'll prefer in the long run is yet to be determined, but the new one is certainly more accessible to me as a first time listener

Dyl, the issue isn’t so much that the new one is actually bad per se (and I’ve rated it a 3 so I find it enjoyable enough) but this album already toed the line of being too samey (and crossed right over that line for many), and so given that the new album really doesn’t expand on this at all (and in some ways regressed - the lyrics were even cringier in a lot of spots) it was hard to care about it. Like, if I want to hear them at a full album length I’ll just listen to this, for me the new one is unnecessary. Again, hearing both albums around the same time as you have would probably mitigate these issues but as someone who was on this album right when it released and who still has some reservations about it I had a hard time making myself care.

Gotta admit, after spending a few days with each album, I'm beginning to prefer this. Some stellar choruses on here. "John Wayne" and "K." are blissful.
That being said, I think the formula still works excellently on Cry - I think Doof hit the nail on the head in his RYM comments on that album, the magic is still there even if the formula is virtually unchanged and there's even less variation than on here.

Both albums are 3.8s to me. I'm perfectly fine with the new album being exactly like this one; they've perfected one type of song and I think it works - no need for change.
