New one first, I think the first five songs here are the best entry point

I'm finding more good stuff than last year...but 2017 needs the heavy hitters to drop some albums. Fleet Foxes delivered, expecting great things from War on Drugs, The National, Everything Everything, Grizzly Bear. QOTSA not so much.

This is about as far away from a majorly anticipated huge release in the traditional sense but it's got the potential to be a sleeper hit here. It could romp up that 2017 chart (when?) given a fair crack.

class write-up, and glad to see you're back swinging.. about to start listening.. mental pppppos

As a side note of upcoming releases, I'm properly excited about Sheer Mag putting out a new album soon.. in a year of Lorde's marketing team brainwashing Sputnik, I want some fun rock n roll !

Thanks Butcher, I've never checked Sheer Mag, where do I start?

'in a year of Lorde's marketing team brainwashing Sputnik'

Hate to break this to you, but someone different brainwashes them each year.

sheer mag put out three EP's last year that got put together into one album.. so this new one will be their sophomore go.. it's essentially cheap trick dragged into the 21st century with a female fronting it..

yea, the arbitrary attachments they develop for the strangest fucking records.. this site could be radicalized in under a year..

Excellent, excellent review. That said, I feel like the NMH comparisons are probably the weakest link you can make beyond the introduction's bit on the obscurity of this band. There are, in my eyes at least, other bands that are more closely related to this bands sound in ways while at the same time comparisons completely downplay just how unique this band sounds. But that's just my two cents. It's great that you reviewed this, we need more people ok the bandwagon for this record.

Thanks, you're correct in that the comparison is only really obvious on maybe one or two songs per album (most definitely on 'Due to Adverse...'), they also have a similar 'spirit' and appeal in my mind but maybe that's more just me.

Please list some other bands you think share some ground with this as by association I'm guessing they'd be great and would give some more reference points for the sput community (who really need to get at least a little bit behind this)

I struggled with direct comparisons for their sound because, as you suggest, it is quite unique

I'd say the Sputnik's 'similar artists' tab kinda does a good job with describing the band as a "if you threw all of these together" tag.

Not saying you need to adjust your review for that, though. Overall I think this band is way too unique to tie to other bands, which may of contributed even more to their first record never really sticking a landing in the mainstream. Considering most of the popular/semi-popular bands at the time all shared similar sounds and this band only had glimpses of what contemporaries did.

'listened to their first album again last night but this doesn't seem to be on spotify yet?'

According to people on RYM, this album is on Spotify virtually everywhere EXCEPT the US.

I'd say this album is a tiny bit more conventional than the debut, not that it ends up a problem in any way, and again that makes it slightly easier to tie to other acts (but only slightly so).

I'm in agreement though, they are a one-off with an appeal all their own.

'why not the US lmao...oh well'

No idea. It's not even on iTunes to purchase or stream, either.
