CD arrived in the post today, spun it twice and the debut once...this new one I'm sure is more immediate, the debut has Donald Pleasance into Fire Engine and nothing quite has that same trippy appeal on the new 'un.
Not saying this won't end up a 5 anyway, this is possibly even more consistent as a start to finish listen.

Might need four or five listens to reveal its full potential but expecting you to dig it from the off, we'll see...

"the debut has Donald Pleasance into Fire Engine and nothing quite has that same trippy appeal on the new 'un."
that doesnt sound like a good thing tbh
the whole first albums really good but donald pleasance is the best song

Chuck - agreed Pleasance is the best on the debut, but they don't try and recreate that one here, they try something different and I guess the result is the material here is a bit more obviously songful - which I think also works well

it reminds me more of castaways and cutouts era the decemberists more than nmh which user ghandilion i see gave a 2.0 so dont hold your breath
(well the first album did i should say maybe this is different enough for the nmh comparison to be more accurate)
i cant remember the last time i actually paid for an album rather than streaming services i might have to just buy this one though im getting v impatient

oh what wtf was i looking at i only saw they were streaming 3 songs from the album on whatever site i was on yesterday
ty
tbk yeah more psychedelic than castaways but for sure the core of the music is similarly melodic with that nautical feel (again talking about the first album here)

Only one song here directly sounds like NMH to me but from my very first listen of the band they just felt like the sort of thing Mangum could release, has the same indie savant DIY feel to me. Decemberists coud be a good comparison, not a band I've delved too much into as for me they go more the buttoned down and bookish direction.
I tend to go with attitude/appeal/approach as much as soundalike similarities with comparisons between artists.
There's definitely a Grandaddy influence on a few songs too, and this destroys this year's Grandaddy sadly.

this sounds intriguing, will check it

Example, I compared Lisa Germano to the Eels and most obviously the two voices are very different, sonically there are other differences too. But what they're trying to achieve, how they approach writing, the sort of emotion their music communicates - dead ringers.
