this just goes to show Sput could certainly use to implement some sort of "review but not really" option that's more specific than lists and longer than soundoffs

I just get sick of people who use the review space to write papers for their community college English class. It's cute and all, but annoying for people who actually give a toss about album reviews.
I saw the title, saw the band name, saw the reviewer gave it a 5, my reaction was "whoa, this album must be awesome, wonder what he has to say..." and I got half-baked poetry. Between this and people who do "ironic" reviews I'm thinking the site in the process of being taken over by memetic trash.

not to be rude but you're welcome to find a different music community/review website that takes reviews more seriously. what I like about sput is that ANYONE who makes an account can review which means there are going to HUNDREDS of reviewing styles, some that work and some that don't. whenever I see a more experimental review I'm much more excited to read it rather than a run of the mill review. I agree though the site would benefit from a separate "thinkpiece" submission option but this site has so many other problems to worry about

I don't believe poem reviews per se are what's controversial, it's how they're approached. The principle difference is that SoccerRiot's poem more directly addresses the actual music (in terms of sonic characteristics). I understand that this particular write-up is more focussed on evoking a general theme, and that there is disagreement surrounding whether reviews can be that far removed from an established discussion format.
As for whether sputnik should or shouldn't approve, well, con is right; there are far bigger problems to worry about, and I think it's counterproductive to actively discourage honest artistic efforts. The site as it is may not be capable of accommodating "unconventional" pieces, but I fail to see why we shouldn't be able to make some room for them. Experimental reviews as a whole can be valuable in pushing the boundaries and exploring creative ways to tackle reviewing.
