Alligator or Boxer should probably be your first
Honestly, I don't think Alligator would be the best starting point, though it is my favourite. It's a very subtle album and it takes several listens before you really get into it. Best ones to start with would probably be either Boxer or High Violet imo because they're more immediate.

Agreed. Alligator also my favourite but that's over years of picking up its nuances.
I think Boxer specifically has stronger hooks and cleaner production than High Violet, making it more accessible. It's also the quintessential definition of the band musically and thematically. I actually think of Trouble Will Find Me as the closest cousin of Boxer, so that's probably another great record to start on.

Boxer isn't my favorite but its definitely the logical starting point as it has the most accessible and massive songs. That and it has Start a War which is pretty much the best song ever made.

This album is jaw-droppingly gorgeous in every possible way, and utter perfection, except for Day I Die and Born to Beg, except that Day I Die has been growing on me exponentially, so I guess it's just another Demons with a slightly lackluster chorus that doesn't even matter in the end because the entire song as a whole makes such a powerful package.
I can accept one Fireproof per latter-era National album as long as they continue to be so utter fucking consistent everywhere else.

Day I Die might be my favorite on here.

Start A War, Fake Empire, Brainy, Apartment Story, Mistaken For Strangers, Slow Show, Guest Room, Racing Like A Pro
Boxer is the definitive National album in my humble opinion, with Trouble Will Find Me not far behind.

The chorus of Apartment Story and the Coda of Slow Show are arguably the two greatest National moment aside from the the first 2 minutes of All The Wine.

I agree with the others, Boxer is a better place to start.

you know I dreamed about you, for 29 years before I met you
one of the most beautifully endearing lines Matt has ever written, used twice to perfection

"Yeah that line is perfect, Slow Show is the best National song."
Dark Side of the Gym could give it a run for it's money.

I think I'm going to need to listen to this at least 20 times before Ill appreciate it. The 4 singles were great, having a hard time biting on the rest of it. Walk it Back is one of their worst songs.

This average better not fall below 4.2
