great review, dude

mentioned in the news thread that I liked this better than Asunder (still true) but I'm also curious to see how this'll stack up against Allelujah on repeat listens. "Anthem For No State" is up there among the band's best tracks

Great review.

I am absolutely loving this, but like the last album, it is a marked departure from the classic sound and formula, I can see why it is polarising for some, and perhaps by adventuring towards a different direction, they have sacrificed what made them so unique in the first place.

That being said, this is my favourite since Yanqui UXO unquestionably, and it could end up surpassing it in the long-run. While the compositions aren't as explosive as the classic material, they have matured considerably as composers in my view. Instead of investing so much capital in crescendos and climaxes (which have been exhausted for well over a decade within the genre), they have chosen to channel this through even greater repetition and dissonance.....which I love.

Nice work jack. I enjoyed this a lot as I do most GY!BE releases. I'd place this in the same category as Asunder, mostly in that it is a high-quality comparatively short recording that does some things differently, but mostly pulls from the same bag of tricks. This won't bring any new fans to the table, but long time Godspeed listeners won't be disappointed.

Need to listen to it some more and dwell on it but, I'm not feeling too impressed right off the bat. The lack of subtlety and dynamics in the songwriting and the lack of any interesting textures in the sound design have me kind of disappointed. It almost feels too concise, like things pass by so quickly on this album. Such an important part of what gave their previous works emotional potency imo was because of the journey they took the listener on in getting to these climaxes and drone riffs.

Some of my issues with it too ^

These songs are just such a mess. Look at the first track: it's totally useless - worse even, it's downright annoying after a couple minutes. It's textureless. No good melodies, no cool trademark creepiness and imagery. It just comes across as lazy as fuck. Never ceases to amaze me how people justify albums like this.

I'd bet anything that nobody would bat an eye at this if anyone else released it

lovely review as per, though it's a sliver too referential for my liking (someone who hasn't heard Slow Riot would be quite lost given that its your point of reference and a tether for large chunks of the review)

also I find it fascinating that Slow Riot was a record that used to help you sleep
