definitely a lot more pop influences of the art / ambient persuasion contained within those two. Ceremony in particular is essential, whereas Grave is solid but more interesting as a perspective piece (hadn't really found her 'sound' back then imo)

I'm not really a huge fan of Chelsea Wolfe so it always surprises me when people compare the two.

Me neither. Do people actually compare them musically tho? I don’t know about that. More of a vague wheelhouse / association thing than anything else I’d say

I do. To me this record shares a lot of similarities with CW’s Pain is Beauty & parts of Abyss. Aesthetically, both strike as goth/dark artists of (romanticized) witch-like qualities. So yeah, I love them for delivering the same atmosphere. Whenever I’m in the mood for either, a record from the other can follow.

Chelsea Wolfe's approach is way more poppy and digital sounding whereas AvH is like a mix of folk, drone and darkwave. Totally different sound. She has way more in common with Nico, Jenny Hval and Swans than with Chelsea.

Gabba is right, they are really not that different musically that you can't compare, one just uses more strings
Both doing darkwave, just different influences

I agree with Anna also being similar to Nico et al, for sure! But CW also has traces of darkwave (PiB) and folk (Apokalypsis). And I wouldn’t call CW poppy, at least not what she delivers on Abyss/Hiss. But maybe I’m just poppy too, I can live with that.

Anna’s quite poppy on her earlier stuff (as mentioned at the top of previous page) but if it makes their similarities stronger then I’d like to forget I said that now - as it contradicts my previous statement and I enjoy being right on the internets

I thought I wouldn't like 'Ugly and Vengeful' anymore but it just blew my socks off

Yeah agreed a lot. Have barely listened to it these last years, but whenever I do feel like listening it's wonderful

‘Gabba is right, they are really not that different musically that you can't compare, one just uses more strings’
I’m trying to help poor CW, any direct comparison will end badly for her. It’s very considerate of me really when you think about it.
Seriously though, this is still stunning.

it doesn't get as much talked about with all the heavy hitters here, but the closer is absolutely gorgeous

That’s awesome! Did she dance on stage or was involved in the music? I hope you told her how much she is loved here on sput.

what did she smell like
|

Album Rating: 4.5
She smelled like perfume and is very tiny, she didn't dance, it was a production of Midsummer Night's Dream and she wore this long blonde wig to the floor and would slowly walk through the dancers while singing, it was magical
She's so cute!
