yo sleepys, you seem like a nice/chill dude so i apologize for lashing out at you when really i'm kinda pissed that sput seems to love and accept personal, experimental reviews when they're positive and dismiss them when they're negative. my statement that "its pretty telling when the mountains people will die on are those that are least worth protecting" was an angry response to people levying that sort of criticism against this review because the subtext to that response is that xxx has been treated unfairly through its publication, which is clearly not the case.

in an age where basically anyone can go stream an album for free with minimal effort, i don't think a music review has to describe a record like it used to in order to critique it. in a case like this especially, i think arcade could fairly count on his reading audience to understand the context and general sound of the record so he didn't have to (in my opinion) rehash it to back his points.

again, i apologize for lashing out at you in particular. tbh i just threw your name out bc it contradicted the "literally no one" comment earlier. i should have been more precise with my language and argument and sometimes on comment forums like this i tend to let emotion and snapiness form my sentences instead of logic

I'm sure this album is a pile of shit and your sentiments are relatable, but the entire first third of the review could be cut out and it wouldn't suffer tbh. 3-4 paragraphs talking about how terrible it is to even be reviewing this album in the first place is overkill IMO

Ayy Toad thank you! I now understand what you are saying. I really appreciate you writing that all out and explaining it. I totally get why people would not like like X or this album at all. I just felt like the review was more about X himself and how much the reviewer doesn't like the attention he gets. The way it was written almost seemed like he was ready to shit all over this album right when it came out. I read it in a Joe Budden voice

Reviews usually aren't great when personalised but in the odd occasion it 100% works and when the awfulness of the music and the person meet so perfectly a personalised approach works wonders. You just can't tlk about a disgusting abuser without coming from an individual, emotional perspective it would be disengeneous not to

Toad, I have two responses to that. For one, I think there's a similar mindset when it comes to albums themselves as well. When an album succeeds at sounding fresh and exciting, we tend to hold it on a higher pedestal. Another album could also try new things, but not sound as good. It's easier to dismiss that kind of effort. That being said, I think every album deserves a serious, professionally-written review.

However, I would not exactly call this an experimental/personal album review. It attempts to pass off a personal opinion as objective fact. An example of this are things like "inexplicably receive praise and plaudits despite being so obviously and self-evidently not good". The case could be made that all reviews try to do this. However, many reviews (not just from this site) are based on how the album in question sounds, then later explain the writer's reaction to them. This review spends a lot of time explaining how no one should like ?, and tries to pass off the idea that ? is inherently bad. That's impossible. No music is inherently bad, and the fans of music you (generally) don't like shouldn't be criticized for that.

I have nothing against Arcade, but I really don't like the fact that this is a staff review. It does not sound as professional as other reviews from various staff members, even Arcade themselves.
