Actually I was completely off. Guess I had to be thinking about a different show because Death in Fire was more in the middle. You're right about Seigreicher Marsch, well mostly. It was their last song before their encore. Their final song was Twilight.

Kind of remembering that now 'cause I remember them coming back out and doing Raise Your Horns.

The production quality, especially the drums is just terrible. Very bland and boring album, last song on album 'Into the Dark' was the only decent song in my opinion.

It's really difficult to rehash the same material for 10 years across 4 albums and make it interesting, especially if you make it so damn long

I swear the whole internet is talking about how this is the album where Amon Amarth are trying some new sounds and mixing things up, but realistically they were doing this exact sort of thing over a decade ago! On their last classic album (Twilight of the Thunder God), they did that violin transition on the song Live For the Kill. Any of the 'new' or 'interesting' ideas in this album that are being touted as new aren't new, they're just reintroduced into a lesser-quality record, almost as if putting that stuff in makes up for otherwise generic music.

@Gameofmetal most of their stuff is 35-45 min. As someone who detests long albums, I definitely felt every minute past the 40 min mark lol

i would say jomsviking definitely took a few steps out of their comfort zone with the spoken word and general expansion into concept record storytelling sorta stuff, but this is just a retread of that so

Would have 3'd this if not for the length. That was a chore.

Because they actually are. The acoustic intro in Fafner's Gold is something they've never done and the first minute or so of Skoll and Hati's is a weird conglomeration of Maiden, Iced Earth, and every power/prog metal band of the early 2000s riffs. Live for the Kill from Twilight is their one outlier. I'll give you that one.

Jomsviking was an actual concept album though having the same story as the album progressed. This really isn't one.

Hey, I did say that they weren't reinventing the wheel with anything here. It's new for them!

i guess. its such an insignificant addition that its not even worth mentioning though, and people who say they arent trying new sounds are essentially right.

I guess my point was that they've had the same sound their entire career and these seemingly somewhat insignificant additions (acoustic intros, spoken word, power metal structure songs) are huge for them. Of course they are wanting to become more mainstream (as apparent by recent interviews by Johan Hegg) so these "changes" are an attempt to appeal to the masses. At the same time though they still keep that "Amon Amarth" sound. I quite liked these little changes (as apparent by my score and review) as it keeps things fresh and interesting for me. Of course this isn't fresh for everyone, but I listen to Amon Amarth to be entertained and feel like I'm ready to go to war or something. As long as they keep churning these out I'm going to listen.

yeah, so its just Amon Amarth as usual except with all the extra fluff that every other melodeath band has. i wouldnt say those are "seemingly insignificant" additions, i would say theyre absolutely insignificant, and they are pretty much doing the same thing theyve been doing for a long time. these are just tiny, tiny tweaks to me. but i guess if thats enough change for some people then good for them, glad theyre enjoying it. im personally bored of the same old shtick by now, and its going to take more than an acoustic intro and spoken word to get me interested again.

Criticizing Amon Amarth for doing things that every other melodeath band has done is kind of a moot point though. You can say the same thing about every band and album that came after Carcass and the Gothenburg trio in the 90s. It is significant that they added these things to their sound because they've never done it before. It is not new to the genre, but being new to the band is definitely significant, regardless of whether or not they executed it well. The last part is in the ears of the listener and has obviously shown positives and negatives in the comment section.

Im not necessarily criticizing them for doing things every other melodeath band is doing. If they did it well (and made more noticeable changes), it wouldnt be as much of a problem. im just making the point that they have hardly changed at all and the miniscule amount of new things they did do are predictable fluff. Instead of an acoustic intro, maybe actually incorporate the acoustic into the song instead of lazily tacking it on at the start, for example.

But thatll be my last comment on all that, i dont wanna be a buzzkill for the people who are liking this.
