I’m with Eyes here, but I’m open to it growing on me a lot! Only one spin down so I’m making no judgments yet.

I'm in the middle of everyone. I think this is above Alligator and SWB but not quite up to their three classics. "Roman Holiday" is the only song here I find a little bland, though, and even that has a beautiful swell of strings in its closing moments.

I really didn't like "Not In Kansas" at first as well but I've found myself growing fonder of it with each listen.

This band can’t write a chorus anymore huh
‘Duh duh duh duh (loooong pause) duh’ is not a great framework for every other chorus. (Roman...Holiday and I am easy to...Find are the worst offenders)
Female vocals were required because the material is so under developed melodically. Quiet Light is nice-ish. Where is Her Head is different and fairly successful.
I don’t really like any of the female vocals in terms of tone mixing with Matt - swear they’ve worked better before? Honestly the quality here is such that B-Sides of a similar style like Exile Vilify or Think You Can Wait would be easily the best songs here.
Bitterly disappointing, the National are finally genuinely boring and just ‘nice’ guys

SWB did the studio experimentation so much better, on this it’s completely in the way, to the point where it’s almost a like for like substitution, of affecting or catchy melodies. the female guests are utilised better than I expected based off the opener and are actually a saving grace, most of the time matt’s vocal and lyricism is just so surface level that he’s ended up relying on their timbre.
not a sister album to TWFM in any stretch of the imagination, either

Some of the choruses could be stronger, I don't disagree there, but for one dud moment ("Roman Hol.....iday") there's another brilliant melody ("She said please, make the best of him") and in songs like "Hey Rosey" and the title track I think they're great.

This is the only National album I’ve 5’d next to TWFM lol
...but Rylan’s intro just reminds me of The Adventure by Angels and Airwaves and I can’t unhear it

Agreed anatelier, the female vocals are the best feature of the album.

Row - I just need some melody.
Embellishments won’t cut it. Ooh strings, choral vocals, female vocals, the Dessner’s experimenting...lads, I need a song here! Lads? Lads?! Matt? I trust you Matt.
Oh, you’re taking half the song off. Matt....?
