Serious lack of hooks here compared to the new Carly Rae. Hoping Matt and the lads go back to their pop roots with the next album, give us some simple bangers. It's not too much to ask :/

Row - there’s a difference between having melody and having next to no melody. Be reasonable now. You’re admitting this album is light on melody.
Take the chorus to ‘The System’ last album - that was a glorious fit with Matt, he was born to sing that melody.
Never got one melody like that here...despite having female vocalists with a better range than Matt. It’s bizarre.
Might as well have just made this one instrumental.

their self titled is easily their best

I don't think it's totally void of a good melody. "Where is Her Head" is the most melody Natty has ever had in a song.

too much time spent on adding bleeps n bloops in an attempt I guess to anchor the record to present day. alligator thru SWB have all been musky hugs, this is a marigold handshake

Ranked/Rated first full rating (will be fun to see how this changes):
1. Quiet Light [4/5]
2. Where is Her Head [4/5]
3. Rylan [4/5] bit of a generous 4 but I'm in a good mood this morning the ending is the worthwhile type of embellishment and layering (take note Natty chaps)
4. Not in Kansas [3.5/5] there's something about this one, think it might be a failure but an interesting one
5. Oblivians [3.5/5]
6. Light Years [3/5] it's pretty sure, sadly close to a standout here! Piano actually reminds me of an Anathema song.
7. So Far So Fast [3/5] I mean it is good but it isn't 'National good'.
8. Hey Rosey [2.5]
9. Hairpin Turns [2.5/5]
10. Roman Holiday [2.5/5] their laziest ever chorus?
11. I Am Easy to Find [2.5/5]
12. Dust Swirls [2.5/5]
13. Her Father [2.5/5]
14. Underwater [2.5/5]
15. The Pull of You [1.5/5] snorefest
16. You Had Your Soul [0.5/5] still trash

I didn't admit anything, thought that was an obvious one. yeah again not that this is important in any conceivable way to this band but Hairpin Turns, Rylan, Where is Her Head and Quiet Light have some all timers for Matt. Oblivions and title track too, it's more stacked with little moments of gold than anything since HV. but I have a brick wall to smash my head against for a bit so au revoir

Row if it's any consolation no one ever talked you into liking the previous album very much
'Rylan, Where is Her Head and Quiet Light have some all timers for Matt'
Yeah they're the three worthwhile tunes so I agree on that.
