It leaked. And it's awesome. What a shock.

Right. You kind of have to take Kyle's review with a bit of a grain of salt, because he's not big on post-Above the Weeping World Insomnium. It's still kind of a letdown compared to the previous few, but it's definitely, well... better than good. ha ha.

The Offering and Mute Is My Sorrow are just...oh my God. Pure catharsis.

Glad you both like the album. Trey, I hope you somewhat understand my criticisms here and don't dismiss them as biased against newer Insomnium. Are you going to write something about this? I'd be curious to read your thoughts in-depth.

I totally get your criticism of this album as well as the few before it. I don’t think they’re biased, I just think you prefer that older style much more than what they’ve been doing lately. I started with their newer style so I’m pretty much the opposite. I don’t think either of us is biased, it just is what it is (if that makes sense). I didn’t plan on doing anything for this. I guess, I could if I get time.

I'm in the same camp of enjoying ATWW and prior, and while I grew up with those albums, I think the reason I prefer them more (trying to be unbiased) is that they are more interesting. STDIACD sounds like a record that took a very long time to write and a lot of thought was put into the intricate details, structures, melodies, harmonies, really everything. Most of the newer stuff just comes across as more rehashed and uninspired than the former. They sound like albums that are released to fill a contract, not purely out of a labor of love. But that being said, they are still enjoyable and competent releases with standout moments throughout.

...nope i think i actually agree with crysis

damn it

i think this might just scrape a 3.5 due to the t/t and pale morning star being so high quality but the rest is just so formulaic and predictable - nothing really stands out

You really don't think Mute Is My Sorrow is a great addition to the discography?

it's... fine, i guess? but honestly 7 tracks into this album it doesn't really offer much in the way of anything different to the 6 tracks that preceded it. similar chord progressions and riffs to the songs that came before it make it sorta indistinguishable.

gonna be charitable as when this album decides to be great it decides to be REALLY great (old morning star and the last three tracks) and the rest is just 'fine'. i'd say that averages out rather nicely but i won't lie in saying i did want more out of this from a band i hold so highly.

in the end, yeah it's just more Insomnium, but I'm totally okay with that

though I do kinda wish they brought some more Black Metal influences in this, that would've been sweet

The blew their black metal load on Belzebubs - at least Sevanen did.

Agreed. Listen to "Disengagement" and you will hear a band that has real inspiration and are taking care to craft something that mirrors this to the best of their ability. This album half the time feels like they are just going through the motions and aren't even trying.

It took 2 years for Winter's Gate to become one of my favorite albums of all time. I'm noticing a trend here, for new Tool, Opeth, and Insomnium now that I kinda feel like these albums need 10+ listens to really get a grip on what they have to offer.

Have to agree with the review. Its unfortunate, because the band has all the talent and tools. The middle part of the album is shit.

Huh, I think The Offering and Mute Is My Sorrow are the best tracks after Pale Morning Star. It must be because I love really upbeat melodeath. Markus Vanhala's influence is stronger than ever on this album.

If you guys are missing some of the songwriting depth these guys used to have, listen to the new In Mourning. It's outrageously good and deserves attention.
