to be frank Wild God feels like Cave on autopilot

autopilot gets the job done, sticks the landing, and gets the passengers to applaud for some reason. autopilot can be good.
besides, Cave on auto is still better than most at their peak

this guy is currently accounting for approximately 1/83 of my '4 and above ratings'
Seems elite, so I will tentatively concur even if auto-piloting can be prone to dangerous malfunctions

Been wanting to get into this band for a while. Just read up on Nick Cave/this particular album a little bit and now I feel like I have to do a discog run. Just gonna start here and go backwards I think. M///

“Just gonna start here and go backwards”
I don’t want to tell you how to live your life Hawks, but chronological might be a less jarring way to do it. Cave’s 21st century output is kind of eclectic and (in parts) spotty, and makes more sense when taken as an expansion upon different aspects of his earlier stuff. Plus, Nocturama might put you off with how snoozy it is. The 80s and 90s albums have a much clearer arc and have some of his most iconic material (esp. Tender Prey thru Boatman).

work forwards or backwards, the result will be a path of steady 3.5s either way

Work backwards to get to their albums that are actually worth hearing. Some fantastic albums in there

I reckon Hawks is gonna love From Her to Eternity t/t tbh

forwards is infinitely better than backwards, or my personal fave would be just to start with the early 90s stuff - from there you can go wherever, in theory
listening to this and 'Lazarus' (the latter for a review challenge) before anything else, nearly put me off Cave for life (which would've been tragic!)

"work forwards or backwards, the result will be a path of steady 3.5s either way"
This is possibly a worse opinion than just saying he flat out sucks. I get it with some artists, but Cave? The amount of ground he's covered should lead to preferences of some description. This is like failing a personality test... i.e. are you sure you actually have one?

i think his later work holds up to his 90s output quite easily

Skeleton Tree does, for sure
also depends what you're counting because Abattoir Blues (less so Lyre of Orpheus's side) and No More Shall We Part are also v good

No More, Skeleton Tree, Abattoir Blues (side 1) and half of Push the Sky Away are brill, the rest is middling to snoozy

With the exception of Nocturama and Lazarus their 21st century stuff holds to 90s imho, not everyone will agree and thats cool

let's not forget about the 2 grinderman albums, they are better than most of the stuff he released since.... a long time

they're easy to forget when you haven't heard them, oops (will check)
on that subject Carnage is also recent and really good!

Grinderman may not be of your liking (after all, it came out in the same period as Lazarus, which you don't seem to dig), but both albums are lots of fun, really refreshing from these old guys! You may also want to check Adam Freeland's remix of "No Pussy Blues", which to me is among the greatest party bangers of the '00s. Very dull, but works wonderfully, with plenty of acid flowing.
