No, start with The Birthday Party then continue on. His progression from album to album is great and that is where it really began.

I mean, this would be an incredibly unusual part of his discography to start at but w/e
real men go all the way back to The Boys Next Door and do an unbroken binge to here

I started with Abbatoir then went to Skeleton Tree then backtracked through his discography before hearing this. I don't think there's really a wrong way to approach his discog but I do think his new stuff is his least accessible. If you don't mind minimal/ambient with gothic undertones, then sure, dive right in. Otherwise Abbatoir is a pretty damn great album that is way more accessible to the average listener.

From what everyone is saying I'm certain I'll love this. Minimalist/ambient with gothic undertones sounds almost tailor made for me haha. I'll start with this then jump around to his highest rated albums I think.

Start with Let Love In : *the* best Bad Seeds album, don't let anyone tell you otherwise

That's what I always do (newest first, can't resist being part of the discussion/hype...for example just did that with Angel Olsen today) then just go from highest rated/best reputation

Or this, do your thang

It's hard to be part of the discussion with albums like this, tho. Like, NC has... what... 30+ albums under his belt with the bad seeds + other projects?
Still, one should start where one pleases.

It's not hard
I do it all the time
Just talk about what you like and what sounds good and what doesn't
Don't have to be an expert in the field to talk about the music you're hearing

Is this as harrowing as Skeleton Tree?

Harrowing? Not quite.
Has other better qualities though, like I think the synths here are prettier and the lyrics are incredible
|

this is definitely better than skeleton tree, yes.

insightful review, envious of how fast you put together a fully formed take

Would defs recommend this. It's not my favourite, but a perfect point of introduction (I started with it just before Skele Tree dropped and am so grateful I got a sense of peak 90s Cave before his present style). You could go straight in, but it's worth touching base with his legacy first ;]
