Thanks luci. I'm sure I could have waited and dug even deeper but the next couple weeks are insane for me IRL and I didn't want to miss a chance to put my take out there. Appreciate the kind words.

I went chronologically through his discography. Beginning with the Birthday Party. The problem with this approach is that his solo career takes a while to reach a high (Your Funeral, My Trial), but once it does it almost never stops delivering the goods.
So, I wouldn't advise doing that. Any point from Your Funeral onwards is a valid starting point, some are more representative than others, though.

This is a great review sowing. I think it's worth mentioning Conway Savage's death too, as I feel like that's hanging over this album too if less than his son's death of course - but some of those backing oooo's feel like an echo of Savage's vocals in an uncanny way
also he's been at a peak since Abattoir Blues? this is No More Shall We Part erasure smh

Thanks Rowan! That's a good observation and one that honestly didn't even cross my mind. As far as the Abbatoir Blues thing, I just feel like that's truly where Cave started peaking artistically, even if fame came long beforehand.

I can't claim he has a great unbroken run because of Nocturama (ugh) and Dig Lazarus Dig (pretty average to me) but NMSWP is his best album imo and The Boatman's Call is fantastic too

Lack of mention of Henry's Dream and Tender Prey itt makes my soul die :[ NMSWP is great though, I feel that one's shadow over this to a certain extent

Love how the entire album is absent of percussion and then the drums come in on Hollywood. Feels so fitting to close out the album, like fanfare for an epic goodbye.

agreed Johnny that I think there's a lot more NMSWP (and Boatman's Call) in this album's DNA than people seem to be crediting
also Henry's Dream is right up there with Let Love In for me. top 5 Cave for sure, but I was focusing on the recent stuff because that's where the discussion was

The Boatman's Call

Alright, decided to tackle some of his 90s stuff to get a feel for his style, then I'll go to Skeleton Tree, then this. I'm excited.

Nice, NMSWP getting a lot of love - that’s my favourite
Then Skeleton, then maybe this, then Boatman’s...then Abbatoir or maybe Let Love In

this is def more immediate than Skeleton Tree. I can't get over how transcendent it sounds. It'd be weird to love Skeleton Tree but hate this but I've seen a few people express that opinion

Agreed with everything Rowan said on this page and Doof. NMSWP is amazing and his best imo, then Skeleton Tree is my 2nd favorite. Then Murder Ballads, Let Love In, Abbatoir, Boatmans Call, Henry’s Dream are next best in no real order. I have to revisit some of those older albums, I listened to them a lot when I was younger but not as much these past couple years for some reason.

What an album. Absolutely perfect. These last three albums have all been incredible. With the exception of maybe Let Love In or No More Shall We Part I think they really are his best work. This, Angel Olsen and Menzingers. What a week for new music man.

Actually I like Push the Sky Away, this, Tender Prey, and The Good Son as much as those. If I tried to rank all his albums it'd be basically interchangeable after NMSWP and Skeleton Tree, such a consistent band.
Sun Forest is incredible, with some of my favorite lyrics of his.
