They had Eno on some of their last EP, it's not a far chance that he'll produce for them again after this

I agree that this would have been better with more and more of their very best, but I don't know if that's a fair way to assess an album. VLV was amazing but I think there might be some nostalgia bias going on because that album had its duds as well (personally, I blended VLV with the very best from Prospekt's March, and oh my, is that a classic and a half). Everyday Life isn't perfect but the experiments were, in my opinion, successful - even stuff I'd normally cringe at (a pop-rock band doing gospel/soul) turned out quite well, and plenty of songs delve back into that lush, elegant classical piano again that was so prevalent in the VLV/PM days. When they go histrionic/over-the-top, it sounds like a better version of MX/AHFOD, and when they go straight up acoustic ('Guns') they succeed too. I just can't find many flaws with this aside from it being too diverse (?) and also falling flat on its face conceptually which to me is the bigger issue, even if each musical moment attains its goal.

This just feels so underdeveloped and slight, half of the songs on this album sound like demos of half-baked ideas. There's some great ideas here, they just don't seem fleshed out, especially not for what is supposed to be a "concept" album.

Arabesque is really good though, the little jazz horn freakout at the end totally took me off guard in a good way, I want to hear more of that band and a whole fuck lot less of some half-hearted acoustic guitar strumming while Chris croons pretentious shit. I will say this does give me a little hope for the band though, I'd pretty much written them off since Mylo.

I wanna give this a spin but part of me feels like I need to catch up on their discography first... and aside from a few radio singles, I haven't heard anything they've done post-Viva :/

Check Every Teardrop is a Waterfall and the Ghost Stories singles minus Sky Full of Stars and you're basically done

I’m still trying to get my head around whether I actually like this record, but I definitely love that Scott Hutchison gets a song writing credit for Champion of the World. Chris Martin has said that it’s a reimagined version of Scott’s / Owl John’s song Los Angeles, Be Kind. Hopefully that directs a few more people to Frightened Rabbit and Scott’s music in general

Listened to this once through and haven't formulated a rating yet, but this is definitely the best they've been since the Viva La Vida era and "Orphans" is great.

I liked this so much more than I thought I would, really like the experiments they tried here (gospel, arabic culture, etc.)

You should definitely give Mylo Xyloto and Ghost Stories a spin. They might surprise you. Skip A Head Full of Dreams though

This is bland as hell imho, but y’all are inspiring me to re-listen to Ghost Stories.

Orphans is one of the worst songs I’ve heard all year

I can’t believe at the turn of a this decade people still care about Coldplay

Never listened to that Kaleidoscope EP. Had only vaguely heard of it tbh. Is it halfway decent?
