The language barrier is an interesting matter. As a non native English speaker, I did not take into account what was said for quite a few years (and even now it's clearly not my #1 argument for loving an album). I grew up listening to music and not understanding a shit about the message (that's why my parents didn't care either if I listened to 50 Cent talking about dicks). If I love(d) Green Day, it's because their melodies stayed in my head; if I love(d) Pink Floyd it's because their sole music could make me feel things I never encountered before. Same with Cult of Luna this year, I never bothered reading the lyrics and I don't care, I love this record for what it sounds like. That's only when I'm deeply attached to an album musically that I try to go full lyrics-mode (eg reading Fall of Efrafa's lyrics and lore made me 5 Elil). I understand that for you guys it must be pretty important (it is for me when I'm listening to francophone music), but I feel a lot of non-native English speakers do not truly care about the lyrics, as long as the music is pleasing.
That was my 2 cents, and I don't know if it's interesting, but I've wanted to talk about this subject for a long time, so a Swedish album thread might be the perfect place for this. I wonder if I'm talking bs or if others feel the same.

great post dedex, i feel you a lot as a fellow non-native english speaker. however i do realize how the lyrics add to the context of the music, but most of the time i don't really pay too much attention to them. you always spot poor lyrical work though.

Yeah that's the same for me in most instances as well, I very rarely connect with lyrics and it is usually something I investigate after I've already fallen for the music in question. Despite being a native English speaker I did have exposure to the limits of language through my love of Sigur Ros, then of course you have virtually indecipherable screams found in extreme forms of music; such as another early example of mine, Converge.
This helps to illustrate the contrasts actually, as reading some of Converge's lyricism helped to enhance their material, whereas I've read very questionable things about Sigur Ros and have decided to actively avoid translating anything - through the fear their alien-like wonder will be somehow lost.

Fall of Efrafa is absolutely the sort of stuff you wanna be going full lyrics mode on. As a native English speaker a lot of music from all around the world is in my language, but I'll agree that delivery and timbre is more important, so long as the lyrics are decent.

Noticeably bad lyrics are very off-putting, nonsensical or indecipherable ones are not - essentially if you're performing lyrics in a way I can understand them, they better be passable, at worst.
I should delve into FoE's lyrics more myself, absolutely love that band.

I feel this discussion bc I wish I knew what all the sound clips on the last SFFS record were saying.

"I feel this discussion bc I wish I knew what all the sound clips on the last SFFS record were saying." this tho
not understanding the language of the lyrics is neat cuz it means the vocals are more of an instrument where you can focus on the melody, blend it with the instruments, and feel it more than hear it (:
