the opener is a very interesting sound for him. i'm not sure if i'm in love with it yet, but it is very nice to hear something so different after the safe nashville sound, even though i love that record.

Yeah, I think I appreciate the opener more than I enjoy it, if that makes sense. It dragging towards the end is my biggest weakness for the whole record, but I think it's a nice answer to the criticism that his stuff is all too similar

On further reflection, this suffers from some of the same issues that The Nashville Sound did. Musically it’s never less than very pleasant, but rarely gripping. A lot of the melodies are very familiar, but this is country so that’s not too big of an issue. However, the triteness and somewhat virtue-signaling nature of some of the lyrics (which was The Nashville Sound’s greatest flaw, though I still enjoyed it a lot) is a bit disappointing. I just miss the rawness of Southeastern and the depth of character of Something More Than Free. This feels a bit too comfortable (right down to the fact that “Letting You Go” has almost exactly the same sentiment as The Nashville Sound’s closer and is also the closer here). That said, tracks 2-4 and “River” are really excellent and prove he still has it in him to write more nuanced, gripping stuff.

The opener is a tad repetitive for my liking but I also echo the sentiment that it's cool to see him doing something different

I've been listening to Southeastern a lot lately (which is still relatively new to me) so I feel like this is at an unfair disadvantage in that context. This is excellent though regardless.

This was my first Isbell, and I have to say I was gripped for most of the album. Felt like it petered out a little at the end but there are some great tunes here

The guitar bits on this album jam much harder than his last release. Overseas bangs.

Overseas might be my favorite, guitars rule on that song

If this is your first Isbell, I highly recommend checking Southeastern! It’s much more country singer/songwriter style, but equally gripping and one of my favorite lyrical albums ever

Loving the guitar tone in both Overseas and Running With Our Eyes Closed. Really digging this after about 4-5 playthroughs, standout tracks for me would be: Only Children, Overseas, Running with Our Eyes Closed and It Gets Easier. Only song I skip is the opener as I find it quite boring and repetitive but every other song is great.

Do the dead believe in ghosts?

Or are you lost in some old building

With over-encouraged only children?

This is maybe his most consistent along with 'Southeastern' - though that has a few classic tracks and as good as all these songs are it's lacking the 5/5 classic tunes

Yeah 'St. Peters' and 'It Gets Easier' are the weakest but still fine, very much Isbell archetypes, a bit by the numbers. Otherwise can't majorly fault this apart from not having anything the level of the best three songs on 'Southeastern' etc
