I think they’re really pleasant on the intro to river king but they’re straight up bad on redemption key haha

I keep forgetting about that track. Yea the cleans on that are....ehhhhh

I get they're going for a Devin Townsend vibe, but the multiple layers of vocals just proves Jesse can't really sing on his own

Idk if you can say the fact using lots of layers proves anything because Karl used a lot of layers for cleans too. Sometimes it’s just the vibe the singer is going for but jesse’s cleans just are super weak compared to what I was expecting after they dropped river king. I still think his harsh is way more emotive than Karl’s tho

What seems to be missing from the equation is Devin Townsend listed as the sole producing credit, like Of malice & Controller.

"I still think his harsh is way more emotive than Karl’s tho"
This right here, along with the fact that his harshes are less powerful than Karl's are why its so easy to tell the two apart. At least for me. Everyone else seems to think they sound exactly the same tho.

You'd have to have shit hearing to genuinely not be able to tell them apart, I think most people are just fucking around when they say that. As far as the delivery goes though, it really does sound like Jesse tried as hard as he could to sound just like Karl. I much prefer his work on Malice.

'Kay, I went back to listen to some of Controller earlier today and it's still great. Idk, this just wasn't doing it for me.

Malice and Controller will never be topped unfortunately.

This version of Sunlifter is top 5 MS for me

Not too big on this version of Sunlifter

There aren't many changes really, but I find the production here to be pretty much perfect, drum fills are sicker, and I like when Jesse turns down the scream intensity for a bit during the chorus-y part, gives it more impact when the full scream comes back for the second upbeat snare part

Yeah, Brendan is a nuts drummer. I think I used to study vids of him on YouTube. But I can't say Sunlifter really got better. Like I said, something about this whole thing feels toothless.

The vocals alone make me not want to return to this, honestly. It took me three separate tries to get through it because the vocals just feel so damn monotonous and uninteresting. I get bored after a couple songs. I've never really liked their vocals to be fair, but still.

True, the vocals have never been a highlight of this band for me. That sort of pure middle register yell/scream never jumped out to me. I like screams to be more throat-shreddy and harsh.

I think this record is a big step up after the Absent Light which wasn't bad but pretty boring. Can't remember a single track there at all.
it's definitely not Controller though

Absent Light kinda stomps this for me.
